Problem with "Old Style" Thompson/Center Contender

The member ship was so very helpful in solving a problem I had with my Wickliffe 76, so I'll give this one a try.

I had a problem with one of my "Old Style" Contender frames, where the safety would not retract to allow the hammer to hit the firing pin when the trigger was pulled.

I replaced the safety spring as well as the inter-lock safety spring.  However this did not solve the problem, and in addition I now have a situation where the sear will not engage when the hammer is brought to full cock.

Is this familiar to anyone?  Does anyone know where I might find diagrams depicting the positions of components in each of the cycling positions, or perhaps, Contender patent drawings that might indicate this same information?

Thanks for any light that can be shed on this problem.

I had a similar problem with a contender at one time. The firing pin plate or bushing had become loose, allowing the barrel to close and lock, but the firing pin would not hit the primer. Of course this had to happen when I was attempting to shoot a deer. After I got that figured out and tightened everything up, all went back to normal.
As I am sure you are aware, you need to open the action each time prior to cocking the hammer. If you dis-assembled the frame, there is a chance something is out of place.
Hope this is of some help.

Did the problem come with the gun or did it start after changing barrels? The older barrels had a one piece locking bolt and they were prone to not engage far enough to disengage the hammer block. The newer barrels have a two piece locking bolt which works much better but even it does not work on every frame. Try cleaning the area of the locking bolt and if a firm snap closing does not help send it to TC and they will fit a new locking bolt. In the past they would send you a couple of sizes to try but that was a long tome ago. Good luck.

Also misenarn, Am sure you are aware that the Contender has a safety that adjusts for rim or center fire, if not in the correct position will not fire.

Sorry again misenarn, I reread your post and saw the hammer will not stay cocked sounds like someone has been working on the trigger and the sear or hammer has a problem. It is not the series that has the trigger stop screw in the guard is it? Could have the the screw adjusted too far in. If not TC is your best bet.
