High Wall Hammer Fly Modification
Sep 4th, 2013 at 7:12pm
Print Post
I posted a WTB on the buy and sell forum, but thought I would cross post here.  I have a flyless hammer (flat spring) and a newer single set trigger lower tang.  I sent a message to Baldwin Sights as suggested, but thought I might check with you skilled craftsmen here.  Ballard Arms has a hammer, fly and pin listed separately for about $115, but there is no indication that the hammer has the slot in it. Like some others, I have had no luck contacting them.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jack

You will also need a set trigger sear.

Jesse,

I have all the parts as shown in the DeHass book on page 181.  It lists a set trigger sear.  Is the main sear the same?

Thanks

The set trigger sear has a shallow groove cut in the bottom curvature for the fly.  Also, the sear spring is a little thinner than a standard sear spring.  Try Wyoming Armory in Cody for parts.   Bob

I guess I will do some disassembly this weekend. I have two other walls with set triggers. I will take one apart and compare the sears. Thanks

What did Steve Baldwin have to say?

He just replied to my email stating he could slot the hammer but asked the same question about the sear. I will do some photos of the parts on both my high walls in the next day or so.

Thanks

Problem solved.  I just picked up a hammer with fly on eBay.  I will have to cut a slot in the sear but that does not look too difficult.  The sear spring does not seem any heavier than the one in my other wall with a set trigger.  I will try to measure the amount of force required to trip it.  Steve Baldwin indicated that he could slot the hammer, but he only had military flys.  Not sure what the difference is.

Not sure what a" military fly" is, but Winchester had two different types they used. The first type would keep the hammer at full cock when the action was closed. The second type would drop the hammer to half cock when the action was closed.

I have an older model that I picked up and had reworked by John King into a 45-90.  It has two flys, The normal set trigger one and another that functions as a decocking fly.  When I picked up a couple of other high walls recently, I sort of missed tat feature.

Have you talked to JKing about what you want. He could certainly do whatever work you wish to have done.

I should be good assuming the hammer I got off eBay works as advertised. I figure it would be close to $100 if not more to have a fly installed.
