Winder Musket Rebuild

I have a Winder musket action that I plan to rebuild for a .22 BPCR rifle.

In looking at the block, it seems to have a fairly large firing pin/hole.  I'm looking for advice-use as is, bush to smaller pin?

I'm planning to use the DZ extractor.

I'll probably have the sight holes welded so I can color-case the action.

Are there any other mods folks would recommend making?

Is DZ doing the extractor install? If so, ask them to do the block, as well.

Going with a SST? Now that Ballard Arms seems to have, once again, gone away, parts might be a bit more difficult to find. However, with care, the standard trigger can be worked to a very nice 1#, or so.

What SSShooter said.

My 22 low wall is based on a 3rd Model (low wall) Winder.  I've never refinished (or even finished) it so the holes just have plug screws from Brownell's in them.  I had the tang heated and bent to PG shape and added the parts for SST gotten from the late Joe Harz, IIRC.  If I had it to do again, I'm not sure I would go to all the trouble of finding and fitting the SST parts, as they can be a little temperamental.  As SSShooter said, you can get a very nice, light standard trigger if the 'smith knows what he is doing.  A couple of advantages in starting with a Winder Musket action is that it comes with a hammer with a slit for a fly as well as the sear with the groove for a fly to pass through.

Green Frog,

I'll get the tang bent as well.

I decided that the SST wasn't worth the climb, so will have my smith set up the single trigger with a nice, light pull.

I do like the lighter hammer on the Winder, too.

I may try plugging the sight holes at first, if I can be careful enough when I fit the stock to not scratch the existing finish.
