High Wall pressure gun ????

Hi All,
I recently came across a photo of a thickside highwall that looks like it was outfitted with some sort of pressure testing device ??? Huh
Either that, or a really heavy duty scope mount .
Have a look, and let us know what you think this may be.

From what I can remember winchester had for years used the high wall action for ammunition testing. I used to have a 30-06 pressure test barrel and it was set up to take the old copper crusher slugs for pressure measurements. Someone wanted it worse that I did and sold it to him. Frank

Thanks for the response.
It reminded me of photos I'd seen in old Lyman reloading manuals.
Not sure if the action would be useless to rebuild into something or not.

My old eyes aren't so good anymore. So I have to ask this question. Where is the port where the copper crusher slug?. From the looks of your pic I'd say it was on the receiver ring. That may have something to do with the receiver being usable or not. I'm thinking with a new barrel for something like 32-40 or 36-55 it may not be a problem. I'm also wondering about getting the hole tig welded and heat treated to restore it to use. Of course if anyone has any other info I'm  sure the poster and myself would welcome it. Frank

If this is a genuine Winchester pressure testing gun, I wouldn't dream for one minute of trying to convert it into just another High Wall. Such firearms are so rare that they have great collector value and are probably worth several times more than an ordinary production High Wall of the same time period. It's a piece of Winchester Factory History and should be left as such IMO. There are several thousands of High Walls out there that you can use if you wish to mess about with one.

This gun was listed in a local auction, and got sold yesterday.
Unfortunately, I could not attend.
I will see if I can find out what it went for.
