Machining a barrel

I am thinking of machining a barrel out of a round blank to half octagon/half round. It will be a Green Mountain out of 4140 matl. I have the setup for the mill (dividing head etc..) for the flats but I am concerned about stress relieving while doing the machining process. Should I be worried and if so what are some tips (John Taylor)?
