Where to get 32-40 Ballard throated for BS

Looks like I am going to need to look at having my RKS 11.5 twist .321 barrel throated if I want to breach seat.  I just got my custom spitzer mold and I can't seat it at all with by mechanical seater.  The chamber was cut with a standard reamer with no throat at all. just a very small lead.  Never having had to look at having a throat cut, where do I start. John Taylor did the excellent barrel and chambering, but he had no throating reamer.  Any suggesions?

Shooting fixed for a while

CPA does a great job throating for breech seating, in my rifle the bullets seat very easy when cast using 25:1 Alloy!

I would also take it to CPA. Paul Shuttleworth has probably throated more 32/40's than anybody, living that is.

Before gouging out the throat of your RKS barrel to accommodate that bullet, I suggest you measure the diameter of your bullet base band(s). A bullet that is a thousandth of an inch or even two over groove diameter, should breech seat fine when cast 1:20 (tin:lead) even in a standard four degree leade. If you can not get your bullet to seat with a mechanical seater, how much oversize is the bullet or perhaps your alloy is too hard?

The base band is .322 and the front band is .319.  I just got the mold today and have only tried a couple of the samples that Paul Jones included.  Supposedly 30-1.  I will cast some of my own in the next day or so.   Paul talked me into going .322 on the base.  My Saeco bullets seat easier and taper from .319 to .321.  More testing tomorrow.

Thanks

Jack

Did you lube the bullet or try to breech seat dry? If dry, smear some lube on a bullet and give it another go. Your .322 bullet in a .321 groove diameter barrel should be close to a perfect fit.

You are not using a "plugged case", but a mechanical lever that has mechanical leverage built into the design, correct?

If the rifle is to be used in the field with fixed ammunition, as well as at the rifle range for competitive target shooting, it is best to go slow with your desire to breach seat bullets.

On the other hand, if your rifle is totally dedicated to being a target rifle, then pursue the throating process with Paul Shuttleworth at C.P.A. Rifles Inc.  He has the .32-40 throater with the bore guides to hold the pilot concentric in the bore.  There is no one better for this work that I know of.

Also, you only want to place the base of the bullet 0.060" ahead of the case mouth.  Is your seater tool adjustable as to the placement of the bullet?  Check to see that you are not attempting the place the bullet too deep into the rifling.

Hi Jack --
Just as an experiment, if you should have a 0.321" sizing die, run a couple of spitzer bullets thru the die and then try to seat the "sized down" bullets into the rifling at 0.060" ahead of the cast.

Generally, you would not want to shoot "groove diameter" size bullets, but it may get you started and you can then judge the accuracy of the barrel.  Most folks will recommend bullets that are 0.001 or 0.002" larger than the groove diameter to seal against gas blow-by.  However, in some instances a groove diameter bullet may be adequate and it would be worth your time to find that out.

Good luck,

C.M.M.

If you want a Ballard throated I can think of no one better than Steve Duren at Johnsons Sporting Goods Adrian MI.

I need to cast some today as I only had the 5 samples.  I did think about lube and did run through a .321 sizer.  The bullet begins engraving just ahead go the first band. More experiments this afternoon. Anyone have a rough idea what CPA charges?

Thanks

Jack

My 38/55 CPA throated by CPA breech seats with smokless powder just fine. BS with Black powder same bullet the chamber needs to be wiped between shots or the bullet will not seat without deforming

Point is it takes very little to keep a bullet from seating properly.  Lube, little bit over size, anything can make it hard to seat. I would exhaust all bullet variables before throating

All else fails it's not a expensive job to throat.

I cast 40 bullets today, 20-1 ans lubed them.  I was able to seat them ahead of a case with acceptable force compared to un-lubed.  Off to the range to see how they shoot.

Thanks

I don't recommend seating none lube bullet, you can get one stuck and dang lucky if you can get it back out. It just keeps bumping up and sticks in tighter. This comment is from experiance, and I  was dang lucky.
