Rolling Block No. 1 Rebuild

I finished rebuilding this 1880s rolling block. I had bought it online as a military musket, but it turned out to be cobbled together from parts and was nonfunctional. I spent about four months rebuilding it as a sporter, using all the original parts, wood, except a new barrel. It is my first 'build'.

Finally, finished (well I need to polish the chamber, but that is tuning, not building Happy)

What an experience. There were several times, I was sure this would be another failed project, like the VW Squareback, and the Time Machine, but this one I finished. Three or four months, I think and definitely more than $1300 total, including parts, supplies, etc. Not a bargain, but its done, and I love it. I'll let the blueing cure for a week, then fire it next weekend to find the sweetest load, then in two weeks its off to the club for a match!

Nice! What caliber, barrel details, etc. Inquiring minds and all that.

Good looking job. If this a a first build, you really have a feel for what a rifle should be. Best of luck with it and hope you do others.

45-70. Barrel was a barrel blank, I had a real gunsmith cut and fit. IT's chromemoly, not a BP barrel, and the twist is about 1:18. I think it was a Green Mountain Barrel. Length is about 25 inches.

I polished it and cut the dovetails and crown myself with hand tools.

I'll post a range report next week after firing it.

Nice looking for a first project. And yes it gets expensive. There comes a satisfaction in doing it yourself. If you really want to set it off (more money) have the trigger guard and hammer contoured to the sporting style and replace the worn screws. I would start off on the mild side with your loads and work up while looking for any signs of looseness or cracks in critical areas. These old receivers need a good going over before using. I would think your smith gave it a good once over before beginning work. Be careful and enjoy your rifle.
