bullet weight vs twist

What weight bullet would be considered ideal for a 38-55 with an 18 twist barrel. I am thinking it would be less than 300gr, but I am wondering if a 312 to 315gr would work.

From my experience, 300 - 330 tapered bullets work best.  I currently use the Saeco for smokeless and the Hoch for black powder. Both about 300 grains.

Per Don Miller's formula you should be OK with the 312gr bullet pushed at 1250fps. Faster should be better.

You might could ask folks for some samples.  I could send you some in the 275gr range.

There was an article in the Black Powder Cartridge News by Don Miller, Spring 2007.  It was a revised calculation on the Greenhill formula.  For a 1:18 twist, the old Ideal 375166, 330gr calculated to 17.65.
So I spent 2 years trying to find this mold - 1 known to exist and the owner was supposed to send me a few bullets.  That didn't happen.  Resorted to a CAD schematic from old pictures.
Lou Sellman, a Lyman Distributor convinced Lyman to cut 90 of them based on finally getting a group buy together for 80.  Lou had to buy the cherry for Lyman ($800.00) and he is sole source for the mold

It is one of my primary Go To bullets and is accurate to 500 meters in smokeless and black powder. Here is an overview shooting the bullet with KIK, 50 consecutive shots ...

A friend is deadly with his 18 twist using Lyman 250 gr bullet for offhand and bench. 4759 or 4227. I really like 300MP with mag primers also.Pete
