Stevens 44 1/2 in 32-40 load

I just had the good fortune to make purchase of a Stevens 44 1/2 in 32-40 that is in better than 95% condition. This fine example of a Stevens is one of the few that are still around that hasn't been fooled with, and I don't plan to change a thing, however I do plan to shoot it. I have a Stevens 44 in 32-40 that I've been shooting now for a few years and I'm very pleased with it, but the lever lock up is starting to get a little lighter than what I'd like. So I plan to start shooting the 44 1/2.
In the 44 I shoot 12.5 grains of IMR4227 and a SAECO #632 cast bullet. It is shooting very accurate. However I know it is a very light load and I plan to keep it that way in the 44. I would like to hear suggestions for a powder and charge weight for use in my 44 1/2 32-40. I measure the twist rate at 1 turn in 16". The bore in this rifle appears to be in very good condition. I have inspected it with a bore scope and it is bright and shinny with sharp lands.  Pushing a tight fitting patch through it provides an consistently smooth tight feel from throat to muzzle. in my opinion it should be a shooter!
Not looking to make a 32-40 Swift, but would like to have a load with a little more speed than I getting with my aforementioned load.
Have not test fired this rifle yet but plan to next week.
Also plan to test fire my 44 in 32-40 beyond 200 yards in the near future. We have a 500 yard range at our shooting house and think it will be interesting to try some longer range tests.

For a 44 1/2 I would feel comfortable with somewhere between 14 and 14 1/2 grains of 4227. This is a pretty standard load for 32-40s

I use 14.3gr of 4227 and a 200gr Hoch  "Darr" bullet breach seated.

I played with increased charges in my CPA 32/40 yesterday  CPA's are not 44 1/2's    Stronger action with gas escape hole in the breech block. However you may be interested in the charges.

200 gr Hoch Breech seated my standard has always been 14.5 4227 pretty much same charge lot of others use.  I kept bumping the powder measure up half a grain at a time ending up with 16 of 4227.  16 is a hot load noticeable more noise  OK in the CPA safety wise easier to shoot if less.

My bullet at lower velocity shows some tipping on target, 15 grs the holes went nice and round. All depends on the twist and bullet. Shooting a 44 1/2 I would start 13 or so increase until it gave me satisfactory results then stop.  About 1450 fps,  typical for 32/40 200 gr bullet loads is the top end of plain base bullet working velocity. Up around 1600 you needs gas checks.

Other thing is fast powders like 4227 can "Spike" pressure curve jumps up when overloaded, my guess is you will end up about 14.5

Boats,
Thanks for the information and advise. I don't have a mold for 200 grain bullets at this point. I have the SAECO #632 bullet (172 grain from 25 to 1 mix) mold and have been shooting that bullet in my Stevens 44 in 32-40. That bullet has been shooting rather well in that old org. 44. However, I hear that a 200 grain bullet is better for distance and 200 yard accuracy. I plan to do some testing with the SAECO #632 before buying a 200 grain mold. Seems like a lot of the serious shooters are all going to custom molds with pointed bullets and three grease grooves.

That Hoch 32/40 200 gr came with my rifle and has always performed well although at about the max length my  bore will stabilize.

I played with a factory 170 gr mold, fixed ammo, and got pretty good results. Enough that I ordered a custom mold for Fixed from Dave at Colorado Shooters Supply (Hoch) Asked him to cut it a bit shorter than my 200 gr breech seating mold.

Weight is good particularly if longer range or better ability in the wind. My shooting buddy uses factory 38/55 260 grs I use Custom 38/55 300 gr bullets. My bullets wind performance is noticeably better than his. Might not think the little bit makes a difference but it does. Suspect 32/40 same thing difference in 170 and 200 is worth it.

A lot of the Stevens had .319 grooves and most bullet molds to day are for .321 grooves. The accuracy may fall of quite a bit as you get to past more than a .002 base band fit.

It sounds like a very nice rifle, we always encourage pictures Smiley

To ALL,

Thanks for the response and information. Plan to post some photos soon. Test fired some yesterday with the SAECO #632 bullet breech seated and 12.7 grains of IMR4227/Federal 210 primer. Switched to a Lyman #103 tang sight and a globe front sight as I can see them better. The sight in was done within a few rounds but it took several rounds to season the barrel. Once the barrel was seasoned so to speak the rifle started to group. There was a bad mirage running so it was not the best of conditions to test fire in. Of the 3 groups fired at 100 yards the best was just under an inch and the worst was 2 1/4". I will post a photo of the target when I post the photo of the rifle.

Has any one ever see a Lyman tang sight that will fit the Stevens 44 and 44 1/2 with the letter code of V? The base portion looks like a Lyman #1. I have one with the Lyman #47 Windage adjustable stem in it. photos of this as well can be posted if there is any interest.
