Thanks for background info on Dr Maynard.A side note on the Maynard name--while in London two years ago,met a salesman in Purdeys, whose last name was Maynard. We got to talking about single shot rifles and he stated he had a 1882 model and shot it with one of London gun clubs at Bisley. He told me how to travel to Bisley and to visit the National Rifle Association museum and Center, which I did and was treated very well by the curetors and staff. This also included a tour of the many rifle clubs on grounds and ranges. It was very enlightening and would highly recommend to anyone visiting area to see.

We sometimes have one of those, and always had one on the Christmas meet on the range I used to attend. One year Pappy brought his 4-bore (shoulder gun...) and offered it round. There were not many takers.

I meet up with two brothers from England each year at the Baltimore Antique Arms Collectors Show who have a retail gun shop on the property just adjacent to the Bisley range property.  They come over to the U.S. each year and have a sales booth at the Baltimore show.  If a customer in the U.S. has a need for a British arm, they either already have the needed arm, or will do a U.K search in order to procure it for the U.S. customer.  Once the details are confirmed and a deposit received, they then will deliver the piece at the Baltimore gun show, or if time is of the essence, will ship it to the customer's U.S. address.

They are really jolly fellows and most knowledgeable.

I'll have to look them up - I'd expect they would trade theother way about? They could get me a liner for my 28-30-120 - if anyone over your side makes them...

Since one can possess a rifle of that calibre without a 'ticket' here, there should be no troublesome paperwork involved.

Hello Aonghas --
I'm not at home just now, being away on a long week-end.  On Tuesday next, I'll gather up the contact info for these two chaps in Bisley and P.M. it to you so that you can make contact with them and get acquainted.

The Baltimore Antique Arms Collectors event is once a year in Timonium, Maryland, USA and is a genuinely important event is U.S.A. arms collecting.  It is held on the third Saturday of March each year.

Regards,

  Hello Aonghas--

I got back a day early, so wanted to pass along the information as promised.

The company name is CLASSIC GUN COMPANY and was established in 1977, dealing in rifled arms, circa 1850 - 1950.  As I mentioned earlier, they are located 250 yards from the NRA Bisley Camp.

The one brother who is the manager and decision maker is Mr. James F. Hallam, however, his brother comes to the Maryland Antique Arms Collectors show as back up and assist to Jim.

Jim is very involved in British marksman activities being V-P Emeritus, H.B.S.A; V-P., N.R.A. (GB), Asst. Curator, N.R.A. Museum, Liveryman, Worshipful Company of Gunmakers, etc.

They are reachable at RFD Surrey 378 and Met 1392

There is but dwindling interest in the life and times of Doctor Edward Maynard and his genius from the late Nineteenth Century.

I think that is more the reason to establish an organization to collect and preserve what data and information we do now have, than to do otherwise.

Regards,
Dr. Edward Maynard, D.D.S., M.D., M.S.

No, it's "Dr.Maynard !  You got that correct at the first try.  "Creedmoormatch" is my now deceased next door neighbor whom you may have read about in the obituaries column (or you may not have).

And secondly, if there is a tariff levied to those of us who exceed our monthly allotments, please, by all means, do let me know that.  I'm glad to know you are counting and keeping a tally of everyone's message count.  That's important work, and who is better qualified than yourself, a rolling block, to do such work?

Post count totals should be reset back to zero annually anyway.
I think midnight on Dec 31 when they drop the ball and ring in the New Year would be an appropriate time.    Wink
