This is the original front sight from a special order Peabody Sporting Rifle.  It is a "tube within a tube" design that allows variable shading of the small post (currently missing) within. Knurling on either end allows the tube to be turned, increasing/decreasing the lighting of the post.  The slot that allows movement to occur can be seen within the sight.  The only mark on the sight is the number "3" on the underside of the .322" dovetail.  

Can anyone identify maker and model of this sight?

For what it's worth, partial disassembly of the rifle shows the "3" assembly number on various metal and wood parts.  Maybe the "3" on the sight  is an assembly number rather than a size number (???)
