Hepburn .40-70 Just Arrived

I am happy.  I sold may BMW GS (my choice and not my wife's) and decided to purchase a Hepburn.  It arrived today.  This is my first attempt at posting pictures so we will see if they come through.  I have .405 and .30-40 brass coming to see which fits better.  And Cerrosafe is on order to determine what bullet size will be required.  Next goal is to learn to cast bullets (bought the books) and get to the range.  If this picture posts, I will get more out.

Nice rifle!

All you need to find the bore and groove diameter is a soft lead ball larger than groove diameter. Drop it in the chamber. Use a hardwood dowel to tap it a couple inches into the rifling. Pop it out from the muzzle and measure. Is probably a five groove barrel. Not a problem. Measure like the red line shows and you will be very close.

Gorgeous rifle. I wish some company could mass produce those rifles and sell them at a reasonable price. You would think with the  production  methods that abound today that it could be done and at a reasonable price everyone could afford. Just wishful thinking I guess.......

Very nice. Welcome to the Hepburn Club. Did not realize that they offered an original shotgun buttstock. Mine came with a crescent which is very good at beating up ones shoulder. Best of luck in getting it all figured out. Terrific rifles.

Just working up loads in my 40-65 Hepburn. Excellent rifle to shoot. I've ordered a new trigger spring form John King. Will work it down so can get a better (lighter) trigger pull. Has a fair bit of creep, but the pull is probably in 6-7# range, which is way to much for decent off-hand shooting.

Both DZ Arms in OKC and C. Sharps made new Hepburns and both do an excellent job. As far as "mass producing", the first step is mass produce purchasers. Until that happens, think they are fairly priced.

Congrats, very nice Hepburn. Looks to be a Special Order (with shotgun buttplate) sporting model. I have a very late serial # sporting rifle  in 22 WCF with the same shotgun buttplate. Now you'll need to get the Hepburn book when it comes out later this year. I believe that Tony will have a batch available.

Very nice indeed Strider.  I disassembled mine to do the cerrosafe.  A prudent move to not get anything 'stuck'.
Mine is a rebarrel so I used 405 brass.  If yours is an 'original' it will probably be able to use the same as this is 'almost' identical to original 40-70 (except length).  Have not yet found the 'perfect' load for mine yet,,,,but getting close.  Have fun,,,they are a great rifle.  I might add that I made mine a 40-72 so I do not trim the 405 brass.  Smiley Wink

Cary

Anything that's "need to know" about taking it apart for the Cerrosafe ? I was thinking wood only, so the rifle can be heated with a heat gun.

The Hepburn is very simple to completely disassemble. Though I'm not sure I would bother for doing a Cerrosafe cast. Bend a soup-can so it has a 'spout' and you can pour it without spilling. Use your casting glove to protect your hand.

In the interest of being honest, I have 'soldered' an extractor in while doing a cast, so now if disassembly is easy, and my Hepburn I think is relatively easy,  I just take it apart.  My experience with the welded extractor convinced me of this.
Disassembly is easy.  Reassembly is relatively easy, typical fumbling and pushing.  On mine I leave the lever spring a bit loose for assembly and tighten at the end.  Makes it a bit easier to get it all 'shoved in' and aligned.  Of course wood is removed while doing this.
