Is anyone shooting a remington 38-50? Straight case, more powder capacity then a 38-55. If your shooting one I would like your opinion. I have a Ron Smith gain twist in 38 caliber that I would like to try out in 38-50.

Am shooting two actually...Both custom built #5 rollers.  Great cartridge.  Will do 1000 yds at the SageBrush and Quigley.  I have a mtach reamer for it made to Dan T's specs.  CUts a primo chamber.

I put one together using a takedown highwall last year.  I've not had a chance to shoot it beyond 500 yards.  I primarily have it for 200-600 yd midrange use.  I formed my brass from 30-40 krag cases and after initial blowing out, there was a very small ridge inside the case where the shoulder was.  I had to make a cutting tool to remove the ridge.  Otherwise, it was easy to find a good load and is accurate.  I can get around 5 more grains of Swiss powder into the case then the 38-55.  Good luck with yours.  FM

Andre, who made your reamer? My smith does not have one in that caliber.

Mike,--Manson makes a dandy with a bit of throat to seat the bullets out some.

Hi mwhite49,

I have a rolling block chambered fo the 38-50 Remington that was made for me about 13 years ago.  Initially, I used it with paper patch bullets so it was throated long to accept the paper patch bullets.  I'm currently using it with cast, grooved lubricated bullets in Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Silhouette competitions.  Because of the long throat, I'm able to seat my bullets a considerable distance out in the case.  The barrel has a 1 in 13 twist and 5 lands and grooves.

Using that rifle with a 342 grain cast bullet from 1 in 20 tin/lead alloy and 64 grains of Swiss 1-1/2 black powder and .125" compression, my last two silhouette match scores were 27 animals with only 1 chicken each time.  I'm also able to use a bullet cast from a wheel-weight and 2% tin alloy that weighs 291 grains with the same powder charge for the rams if I anticipate the wind will be a factor on any given day.  Recoil is non-existent and the rifle is fun to shoot.

I have a 38-50 on a Hepburn, and a CPA
both 12 twist barrels..Hepburn has a long throat and the CPA has a chamber, more or less for BPCR and a bullet Dave Mos made for me....shooting 62gr GOEX CTG or KIK 1 1/2 best score has been 29, much easier to shoot than my 40-72

I have a reamer that Dave Kiff made for me
pm with your email and I will send a print of the reamer...
