Stevens #47 lefty .22lr & Peterson Scope

Print Post
New to the site and recently acquired what the subject line says, a Stevens #47 .22lr range rifle with a left handed buttstock. It has the Schuetzen trigger guard/lever, dbl set triggers and a brass Swiss buttplate. The bluing is 90+% and case hardening is 50+%. Here is the oddity, though, in addition to the vernier rear and windage front globe sights, it has a scope very similar to a Stevens external adjustment, but it is marked AW Peterson Denver, Colo.
This is quite different from anything I can find online and I am looking to see what its value is. I will try and post pics later.

That's Axel Peterson, I assume. I never heard of a Peterson scope, but he was a very well known gunsmith.

Beautiful gun. I am also not familar with a Peterson scope. Someone here should know something on it. Possible Peterson put his name on someone else's scope?

You have a very nice example of Peterson work. His Telescopes are quite rare and yours looks to be in good order. The Triggers look to me different than Stevens Triggers. They and the lever may be a result also of Axel Peterson. This would increase it's value.
Congradulations on a neat find. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Well, before I put it in the For Sale board, I will (VERY carefully) disassemble and see if there are any signs of Mr. Peterson's on the parts.  Thanks for the info.

About 1970 I bought my first target scope, a J. Unertl 6X small game scope. I remember that it came with instructions that read; “There are two kinds of people who work on scopes, scope makers and idiots.”  Roll Eyes

I was talking about the rifle. Now that you mention it.......please don't take the rifle or scope apart.   Cry

Every Peterson rifle I've ever seen had his stamp on top of the barrel.

Since I'm a lefty, I think I should have first crack at this rifle if it goes up for sale.  Wink

Strobel's gunsight book does give reference to Axel Petersons scopes. Very little detail just confirms he made scopes. As does that mark on yours.

You probably ought to buy the book to confirm the detail if ever selling.

Tom I'm impressed 2 Schoyen duplex measures! They look perfect are they original or reproductions? If reproductions I would give my eye teeth to get one.

40 rod, Everything is original . I do not recall anyone ever making a repop duplex measure such as the King, Pope, Schoyen-Peterson or other. it would have limited sales I believe so would have to be expensive.

Wow is all I can say. Works of art in metal and wood. Most of the individual pieces in those sets would have a high lust factor. All together... Be still my heart.

A few of us think we can whittle a rifle stock. When you look at the work of the masters, it makes you realize we are not in the same league. Thanks for the inspiration.

SmileyThis rifle arrived today.  Upon getting it home I found the following out about it.
It has a 26 inch Stevens barrel in 22 l.r. with an excellent bore. I has Stevens factory G sights and a Stevens palm rest base. The action is marked as a 47.
The lower tang has been heated and straightened.
The Peterson scope is very nice.  It is also the first one I have had the opportunity to buy after 45 years of collecting Schoyen and Peterson Items.
I also think the butt stock is from the Peterson shop.

Congratulations, Det.  Took you long enough.  Wink  Interesting detail about the tang being straightened.
Bring it on over to the spring TR&R match for some show and tell. Would love to see it. I'll buy lunch.

Vall,
Nukemmc, put the rifle up for sale after a day or two after posting and Peterson2520 bought it.

I'm glad it he did, I'd like to see and hear more about it.

I wanted to buy that rifle badly and thought the price very fair. A 15mo little boy and a not always understanding wife prevented it. Am really glad it went to someone who will appreciate it. Please tell us more about it and take some more pictures !

About as long as it takes to say "Syevens" three times real fast.   Cheesy  Well, seems like it anyway.

Det jumped on that one.
