Stevens Tip up in 38CF

I just picked this up. some one had blued it in the 1970's, it had been in one family for years. Comes with a new un fit butt stock, correct rear sight. Bore is decent and they had been shooting it with the 357 cases with 38sp wad cutters loaded with black.

Love those tip-ups. What's with the purple color of the receiver? Is it just a lighting thing?

Kermit,
"some one had blued it in the 1970's"

I think this is an early one and worth keeping and restoring. It has a 34 inch long barrel. I did not know they made them that long. The blueing on top of the color case makes it looks terrible. But that can be fixed with a new color case job.

They made those old Tip Ups in some pretty big calibers, so I doubt .357 loaded with black would hurt it. I agree that it's worth some loving care!

I wondered what would work on those .38 centerfires. I am curious as to what dimensions a chamber cast would come up with.

And I'm curious about the bore as all the 38's I've seen are .37X none as small as .357. Thats(.020) a pretty big bump. Shocked

Rustyrelx...The case is the same, the bullet is not.  A 38 Ballard extra long is identical to the .357 Reming ton Max.  Except the minor difference that the Ballard used heel seated lead bullets of .377-.380.  The max is for .357 dia bullets, inside lubricated.  Same case, different bullet.  Same with 38 long.  Shorten 38 spcl case very slightly and load with a heeled bullet. Or breach seat? Since I haven't done that (yet), I'm not sure about how/when that works. Is that an option for some of the old heeled bullet cartridges?

Yes,That's what I do with the heeled 22rf. Works just like CF BSing.

Or for fun get .38 cal. muzzleloader balls and set them on top a charge of 3.5 grains of Unique, using Lee liquid alox to "attach" them to the case mouth. Makes a fun plinker load for .38 or .32 Longs.
I make up a box of fixed ammo this way and let the alox dry overnight. I also used it at the range with a re-decapper tool and just a single case. Fun to play with in my old Ballards.

Interesting thread. Sometimes see these for sale and was not sure if ammo would be easy to come up with. Sounds like they are shooters. Will keep my eyes open for one. Have one in .22 LR that I had relined and have one in .25 Stevens with an excelent bore. Don't shoot that one much.

Thank you for reminding me about that.  Back in the day,  re-loading manuals had reccomendations for round ball gallery loads for the 75 foot  serious shooting galleries  (as opposed to carnival style "shooting galleries"), as well as "collar button" gallerie loads.  But I really like the round ball idea.  Allows you to work on your off-hand technique all winter, once you have a repeatable load worked out.  Perfect way to utilize my old dairy barn ( Smiley)

32xl Yes I was aware of the case. I just asked about bore.
One solution I have used is to obtain a mold for a .36 cal replica pistol. They come out at .375 and are much lighter in weight plus have a grease groove. In my Remington I can even use pre loaded cartridges.

Great minds must think alike...I cast a bunch of round balls and conicals for my faux 1851 Navy.  Perfect for play-time with 38 Long center fire and 38 Ballard extra longs.  I have not done as well with .31 muzzloader balls and conicals in my 32 Long.  I think the balls may be too light. Undecided

I believe all tip up rifle frames were factory nickel plated, tip up pistols were blued or nickeled.     ...MIKE...
