Remington # 2 RB, .22 Cal Questions (Read 11116 times)

	I purchased the above and have a couple of questions. First I have not recieved it yet but have sellers photos and discription. Serial # 9473 -When was it made? -It has a 30" hex barrel, with an excellent bore 9-10, marked "E". I don't no what that means. -The reciever appears to have been re-cased at some time. -The butt plate appears to be original case. -The wood is good, no cracks but has a coat of finish applied. Can anyone shed light on the barrel and markings? DG

	WOW a "HEX" barrel. I didn't know that Remington made any 6 sided barrels. I just had to say that! Check out Marcot's book on Remingtons. It probably has information on the markings. I have a beat up #2 in 22 LR. Shoots great. Nice little rifle. Also a 32-20 #2 that I had sleeved from 32 rimfire. That's the rifle my two daughters learned to shoot with because I didn't have a 22 at the time. George

	From your pictures, a couple things indicate it's an early #2, so the barrel address should read E. Remington & Sons. Ilion. N.Y.

	Bear in mind that many of the mfg, while they listed production off the shelf rifles in their published advertisements and lists, were more than happy to build whatever the customer wanted if the money was available. So there are lots of exceptions to the stock factory listings.

	DWS8130 I agree with your comment. I just have never seen a #2 with a 30" barrel. Also the forend is different. I has a metal cap on the end instead of a Schnaubel with an Ebony insert. I know it was made before 1896 when the Company name was changed but how much earlier is unclear? DG

	Smoke, the marking "E Remington & Sons Ilion, NY." was used from the 1870's to 1886. Not sure if there's a way to narrow it down much further. The steel schnaubel tip was dropped about the same time as that rollstamp, and they went to the ebony insert around 1887. I haven't seen a rollstamp that was just "Remington & Sons" as you described. John Gyde's book doesn't show that rollstamp, so maybe the rollstamp broke, or the E marking is faint.

	Val I looked at the photos again and confirmed that at times I don't read well. It is clearly marked E. Remington & Sons Ilion, N.Y. DG

	Smoke, You mentioned never having seen a Remington #2 with a 30" barrel. My 32-20 #2 has a 30" octagonal barrel. This was originally a 32 rimfire and I had it sleeved a long time ago. Wonderful shooter that both my daughters learned how to shoot with when they were pretty young. Nothing fancy, but still a good servicable rifle. If I knew how to post a picture I'd be happy to. George

	Recieved the rifle today. It is in great condition. The bore is mirror bright. If it has been relined, I can't tell it. Where I thought the reciever had rust damage, now appears to be a casting defect. This rifle barrel is very clearly stamped "F", measures .945-.950 at the reciever, and .760 at the muzzle (Flat to Flat). 30" long (Muzzle to R block). What do I have? Don G
