Would appreciate any information on this and maybe value. Was given this by an older lady whose ex father-inlaw who has since passed left to her. He was big into re-enactments. The barrel is inlaid with name JOH. ANDRE KUCHENREITER. Has been converted  from flintlock to purcussion at some time but does lock plate engraved with IA KUCHENREUTER. Hand carved stock with a sliding patch box and adorned with brass. The barrel has 7 very deep grooves. Have contacted the Kuchenreuter family in germany by e-mail and confirmed that appears to have been made by Johann Andreas Kuchenreiter and was able to find that he lived and made guns in the 1700's in Germany. Again any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello medic404,

I believe your caplock rifle began life as a flintlock. Your photograph sadly isn't the clearest, and my old eyes don't help either. However, from what I can see, there appears to be a steel plug inserted into the position where the flashhole would have been and the plug carries the percussion nipple. Given that both of the J.A.Kuchenreuter's ceased working before the invention of the percussion cap it's a reasonable assumption it started as a 'Flinter'. A nice one though, and, like me, showing signs of age.
