Schützen rifle sight repair

For years I have been the owner of a very nice System Aydt Schützen rifle I "inherited" from my friend and former business associate, the late Harry Creighton, gunsmith. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the rifle and its sights had become separated at the moment of "liberation" from its previous owner at the end of World War II.

Last weekend I took the rifle to the Ohio Gun Collectors Association gun show with the intention of selling it. Instead, I came away with a set of sights for it.

UInfortunately, the rear sight has quite a bit of play in the windage slide. I wonder whether anyone can point me toward a craftsman capable of restoring this sight to its original working order.

Good decision to buy sights - instead of selling the rifle!  Cheesy

That's always the problem with those Aydt sights...  Undecided

...and I have no idea how to fix this quick and perfect.

But if anyone else has an idea, how we can fix such a sight-play-problem, please let me know!  Roll Eyes

If it's real loose, it maybe a mismatched set. If it's not to bad, you can peen the female dovetail down with a wide (rectangle) brass punch. Take care not to leave indentations as would be the case with a small round punch.

The only other way is to build the male slide up on one side and remachine. watch out for warpage (use a tig or brase it) and  then recolor it.

Ask John Boy about who he had make his sight. He would do a excellent job, if he does repairs or would remake one of the dovetailed parts.

xausa, call Bill Loos in Rochester, NY.  Bill does repairs and has replacement sights also.  He had and custom fitted the sweetest diopter to my Martini  Action Schuetzen and also a new front sight.  Turn around was excellent and his prices were reasonable in my book

If John Boy's suggestion doesn't work out for you, contact Ron Heilman at 253-840-2623. He can make the entire sight from scratch so he should easily be able to refit the one you've got.

Try wrapping a flat thin strip of lead in the threads. May have to try this a few times, but works well for me.

Have a schuetzen high wall that had a loose windgauge front sight that was real loose, did something like Frank suggested, worked like a charm. Just keep in mind there's not much material in the corner of that dovetail cut, so don't hit it too hard. I did it once, put it back together & it works fine.    ...MIKE...
