Schuetzen Caliber Marking question
Nov 6th, 2012 at 1:26pm
Print Post
Hello
I am looking at a German Schuetzen of the Martini type, but it has a barrel caliber marking of  7.5 mm that converts to .295 . This seems a little small for the 8.15x46R. The 8.15x46R barrel markings are usually in the neighborhood of 7.6 or 7.7 mm. I have seen many references to the 7.5mm markings in the descriptions of auction sites but can find no hard information on the 7.5mm marking. Any thoughts??
Thanks
Bob

Based on my 7.7 that is the bore dia.  Slug yours and see if this is not true.  7.5 is a bit small but very possible.  Looks like a July of 1924 vintage.  Any more pics.  Would be cool.

Stractor, here is a pic of the usual proof marks of German schuetzen rifles from the old days.

Yours is close to these marks, I think everything should work fine with "slim line bullets"...

Thanks Biggi
My other rifles are marked with the 172/28 mark. This one has the 7.5mm marking. I have seen reference to that marking many times but can find no explanation of the small size. It may very well be an 8.15x46R with a smaller than normal bullet. In English 7.5=.295" 7.6=.299 and 7.7=.303
I don't want to buy the rifle if it is going to be some odd caliber.

Stractor, there is only one 'odd' caliber that comes to mind ... 9.5X47R. It's obsolete - cases are not available unless one reforms them from another case.  But if one comes upon a rifle in good condition in an 'odd' caliber - nicely engraved - carved - checkered ... why not purchase it and reform brass to make reloads from?

Biggi,  Any idea what the BLG. over the 11gr might mean?

I think that is the intended bullet weight - 11 grams = ~169 grains.

The BL.G. means Blei-Geschoss (lead bullet) and th 11gr is 11 gramm (= ca. 170 grains), like oneatatime already converted.

The 7,5mm is absolutely okay and very common, its a .321 bullet.

Stractor, you can buy that rifle, you will not have any probs to make ammo for it.

And please let us know how the rifle looks. I want to see it.  Wink
