Been following this thread w/interest and am learning more & more!  From all I have read and can ascertain, my guess is that you have an example of an early "gunsmithed" ballard.  I looked at the patent #33,631 and the original internal extractor is nothing like yours.  I think your external extractor was modified and the breechblock slot was welded up and drilled for a new firing pin, with the hammer being modified to suit.  Very neat find!
Regards, Joe

That is quite possible but if so whoever did the work did an amazing job. There is absolutely no trace of modification to it

Is there any records for early gunsmiths that may tie the number 110 to a particular smith, that could be an interesting piece of info

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It's tough to just find a gunsmith by name, unless he's famous. I doubt you'd ever track down any info based on just a nuber 110, with no gunsmith's name.
If there was a name, then that name might be tracked, and if there were records the #110 discovered possibly.
I've got an old rifle built by Emil Flues, and "#100 Tested" stamped under the forearm. It took me about 18 months to track down Flues through Michigan records and historical societies from Mich. and Bay City, and then some more time to track down his relatives and get the rest the info. It can be done, but you'd need a name first.
