I sent off for the catalog recently and that address is

Pioneer Products
76 E. Third St.
Alexandria, OH.  45381      (937-839-4363)

When I received the catalog the address on that is

Pioneer Products
254 Johnsonville-Brookville Rd.
Brookville, OH  45309        (937-839-4363)
                                        (937-839-9741)

So I guess that either address will work?

Have not made purchase of a 30 cal mold as of yet, however have managed to get together dies and other components so as to load for this rifle. Using a powder charge of 13.0 grains of Bulls Eye powder and dental carding wax plugs I fire formed cases. Tried 10 grains of powder and the charge was too light to fully form the case.
After fire forming 30-30 cartridge cases the results were (what I first thought a 30-30 Ackley Imp) a cartridge case that is very near a 30-30 Ackley Improved. The difference being that it is approx. .100" short in the shoulder lgt. and the shoulder not a sharp 40 degree but rather a radius on the case body and a sharp corner at the neck. Odd looking but not unpleasing to the eye.
Using the starting loads for the 30-30 Winchester cartridge I loaded some test ammo. I didn't expect much in the form of accuracy from this first loading but rather it was just to see if there was any potential to this rifle at all.
I mounted a 8X Unertl scope on the rifle and was off to our shooting house to give it a go.  After getting the rifle on paper with the first 6 rounds I set the elevation & windage to strike on at 100 yards. The target was a 1 inch orange sticker on a large piece of white paper. Firing commenced.
I was shocked when the first three rounds cut a group that measure .3795" . Yes the decimal point is in the right spot. The group was a little high and left, so I clicked over to the right one and down one before firing the last two rounds in the test group with that powder charge. The next two shot found their mark inside of the orange target dot. Photo of target forth coming as I will continue with this post with several photos.

I have attached a few photos to this of the rifle, cartridges and test target. The photo with the two cartridges is of a 30-30 Winchester case that was fired in a Winchester mod. 94 on the left and of the Hartung-Farr 30-30 IMP on the right. The Hartung-Farr cartridge has more case capacity and it is easy to see. Note that the shoulder of the case is a radius where the case body meets the shoulder but not where the shoulder meets the neck.
That 30-30 Winchester case on the left was the only example I had at hand to use for the photo. It has what what remains of the 170 grain Herters bullet that I killed a buck with back in 1966. I was 17 at the time and loaded that round with a Lee Loader. Wow, does that seem like a long time ago!  Remember Herter's Catalog? More to come if anyone interested, if not I'll stop with this post.

Sendaro,

You're taking me back a few(!) years. There was a Herter's store about 45 miles from me way back when. Always spent more time in that store than I'd planned to when stopping by to get a few things. Still have an old Herter's bullet swagging press stashed back in the cubby hole. They had good stuff and a big inventory.

Remember the Herter's Hudson Bay Model Perfect and the Mother Herter's Model tag names that they used for marketing. There was a marketing ploy on just about everything in the catalog! I spent hours going over and over those catalogs. While the other kids were buying comic books, I was buying items to make my own fishing lures and later to reload the ammo for my 30-30. Wouldn't it be special to go back and spend an hour or two going over the catalog with the Grand Old Oprey on the radio playing in the back ground? I can almost smell and hear the Jiffy Time pop corn being made out in the kitchen.
Those days are gone, but I can for forget the joy and the wonder of it all. Oh, the adventure possibilities that the Herter's catalog sparked for a teenage boy.

John don't stop sending info and pics. on the rifle and the results. It's a single shot classic with a one piece stock and it don't get much better than that. I am extremely interested in what lead and tin alloys will do in that rifle and at some point in time you will need to make a breach seater to take it up another notch.

J. Louis,

At this point I've established that the rifle has an accuracy potential. The use of BL-C#2 powder maybe a tad slow for the cartridge with jacketed bullets. I plan to try a faster burning powder like H322 or 3031 and see where that takes me. The 1 in 12" twist tells me that the 165 to 170 grain bullet should be about the best in the jacketed bullets. What bullet would you recommend in the way of a lead /tin tapered bullet to be breech seated? I hate to just buy a mold and not get the right bullet to start with. Would like to even get a few cast bullet of different types to try before buying a mold. I do not want a gas check bullet.
It appears to me that the barrel has some slight, very light, pitting in the breech end for about 5". This can only be seen with the use of a Hawkeye type bore scope. The barrel also has 4 lands and 4 grooves, and appears to be hand lapped. After I fired 20 rounds I check the barrel and found some copper. Went at the bore with a little Rem Clean and it cleaned up right quick like.
Would like to hear what your thoughts are.

Frank,

Have seen a few catalogs at the gun shows now and then. They are still fun to go through. My Dad bought reloading tools and loading components from Herter's back around 1961. We used the Herter's Vandalia shotgun wads that had an adjustable height base wad. The shot cup was a cylinder that could be split if the loader wanted. I started shooting trap back then and that wad made an old H&R SS 12 ga. Imp Cyl shoot like a full choke trap gun. I can still remember watching the Red Skeleton show and loading shot shell on the Mec. Seems like things were much simpler back then. Take out the trash, burn the papers do good in school, and deliver the newspapers on time. Life was good!

Being from MN, I made several trips to Waseca.  It was back then, as Cabelas is today, only better. In 67', I started my full time job and with money in my pocket, a lot of stuff went home with me.  New Charles Daly shotgun, decoys, reloading supplies and I always loved to drool over their wood.  Beautiful wood for a reasonable price.  They were then sold to the Seeborg Jukebox company. Shocked  They ended up blowing out the merchandise and then filing bankruptcy. A common practice amongst companies in the 80's.  That pretty much did in Herters as we knew it when growing up.

You can shoot any bullet you want in that 12 twist, even 200 gr jacketed BT's. I've shot 5/16 groups in my 12 twist 30/40 HW with 190 gr SMK's.

My BS bullet for my 14 twist rifles is 1.16 long and I've shot 1.2 long GC cast bulltes in it.

I would suggest that if, PJ will make a 30 cal tapered bullet, that you get one 1.200 long from him. If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you for what he charges you for it.

I don't think you can go wrong with a deal like that Smiley
