When I dug out the rifle I posted about in the "Kettner" thread in the Single Shot section I had no idea where it would lead. I got to thinking that I hadn't shot it in a long while and maybe I should. I noticed Buffalo Arms had some of the German Stop Ring bullets which are what the target 8.15x46 used. The stop ring is an over diameter band that stopped the bullet from entering the case beyond the point where it contacted the neck and filled the space between the neck and the leade. The Germans used this for their Schuetzen shooting instead of breech seating the bullet as was done here. A close examination of my chamber looked like it might well be throated for the stop ring but the only way to be sure would be to try one in it. I ordered a box of the stop ring bullets to try. I dropped one in the chamber and measured the length from the breech face to the bullet base and then saw where the base would be in a case. The stop ring was just beyond the case mouth. I wondered if my cases made from 30-30 were short. I remembered that back in the 70's I had ordered some Speer/DWM 8.15x46 cases and I managed to find them. They were 46.4mm long and this closed the gap between the neck and the stop ring. Good to go - except that these had turned out to be Berdan primed which is why they had gotten packed away back then. Also back in the 70s I had gotten some different Berdan primers just to have around. They had gotten packed away also. I found them and some were the right fit. I fired one to make sure they were still good. Now I had to decap, the bane of Berdan. I remembered that one time I had picked up a Berdan decap/recap tool in an antique store. I dug it out. It was marked 8mm. Could it be? Yes! I was in business because I had never gotten rid of these "useless" things over the last 40 years. Next, to see how it shoots with these components....

I have several of these and they are great. I have made sleeves for shot-gun size ones for doing the large British cases they sure make getting the primers out easy. I have a fair supply of berdan primers and it is a lot cheaper than going to new boxer primed cases.

Sometimes I take one of my old Ideal tong tools to the range if I'm diddling with seating depth. It's always drawn looks and comment when I'm seen squeezing down on a round. Most have never seen one in use- or at all. So, your decapper would probably fascinate the gang around here. Chiseling out a primer would be too odd for 'em.
