it has all the tools .
the rifle was built by a gent E larralde of santa barbera ca. it came with a collection of old brass some date stamped to 1943 in good shape.
can anyone tell me any thing about the gunsmith? i plan on stocking this rifle and shooting it here locally.

Haven't heard the name Laralde before. Looks like nice work on the various pieces.
A quick Google search turns up several people named Laralde in the Santa Barbara area, so you might consider contacting one of them to see if they have/had a relative that might have been the gunsmith involved in your Ruger.
There's also the possibility the barrel and tools were on a much older gun previously, and refitted to the Ruger action later.

irish66,

Try contacting the San Diego Schuetzenguilde or one of it's members. I know some of them knew and shot with Ed. Send me a PM if you don't have any luck and I'll try and get a phone number for you.

Irish it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the barrel was not made by Barry Darr. Is there any markings on the underside of the barrel.

Irish, As I PMed you Ed was an employee of Saeco and was there when Barry Darr was in Carpenteria with Bob so like Louis I think it is a darr barrel.
Saeco sold to Redding after Bob died Ed stayed in Santa Barbara for some years.

NICE  FIND!!!!  one of those that makes me almost Froggish with envy.

With that barrel  and a heavy stock it should be a pussy-cat off the bench or crosssticks.  check the twist and match you bullet to that.  and it will be real "condition" resistant.

Dave Crossno has several nice stock patterns for Rugers

I understand the false muzzle sort of. case in the camber. Than push the bullet down muzzle to a depth you want. is this correct. Also can you load everything from the breech if you choose?????TommyAuger

dontknow about loading all from the muzzle guess you could.
had a great chat with barry darr tonight. he told me all about this rifle and some of the history of saeco.
the rifle was assembled by Ed Larralde the barrel and tools were done by him.
I am proud to own it.

Tommy, normally when loading a false muzzle breech loader, a plugged case is inserted into the chamber and the breech closed, not a primed or loaded one, then the bullet seated, the plugged case removed and a charged one inserted.  That way you're not working on loading a bullet into a primed/charged case with the rifle closed and cocked.   Shocked

I had used Ed Larralde in several instances many years ago. Still have a barreled A1 Mid Range Ballard he installed a barrel for me. I was informed at the time he was selling Saeco molds and had been "familiar" with Mr Barry Darr. Late 70's to early 80's if I remember correctly. He put some 38-55's, 32-40's, and 40-70's and at least 2  45-70's for me. There was a barrel maker in Montana that he used alot in the late 70's. Nice gentleman.

next week the piece of wood i have in mind goes to the sawmill for a cut or two then off to cpa. I have to build a seater for it, i am going to build both a pope style and at barry's suggestion a breech seater. I have owned too many big bore bp rifles so i will ring this un out.  i have an mva rear will try to see if they make a base or i will so wil; have a little fun getting this one on the bench will post results when it is done.

problem with tang sights on Ruger SS rifles is the safety button.  A lot of target-only #1/3 rifles have had the safety mechanism removed, just to simplify things.  I guess they feel that since it is a target range-only rifle a positive safety is not required.  (I have reservations about that myself
Some also use the ex-safety slot to anchor a breech seater but a highwall-style breech seater works pretty well.  Steve Durren makes a real nice one, as do the other usual suspects

If there is no safety its a matter of getting the angles of the base correct and then drilling and tapping.  Some have fabricated a new safety button with "wings". That way the bottom of the sight base can be relieved so it bridges over the safety.  the "wings" extend on each side of the base so you can still have an operational safety.  I have a #3 project slowly percolating and I'll go that route myself.

being a tool and die machinist making a site base is not a majot thing will most likely incorporate a breech seator in it. this does not have a safety so it will be easy have a long way to go and a short time to get it done.
