Stevens 47

Stopped by a small local shop the other day and much to my surprise there was a Stevens 47 .22LR, double set triggers, hooked buttplate, Stevens vernier windage adjustable sight with adjustable appature. Didn't have a tape but I believe 28" heavy 1/3 octogon barrel.

Finish was excellent, metal was 80% or better, butt had been professionally redone(I would have know if the deal hadn't told me) forend was original finish.

Price $2000, trying to talk myself out of it but dang it was a beauty! Any thoughts on the price as described?

Tell yourself this...... When and where will I find another one? And at what price.
I don't see these coming down in price anytime soon. A .22 with dst is more fun than a barrel on monkeys so go for it.

Couple of things go through my mind when I see something like the rifle you describe.

Buying local were you can look at it and don't have to pay shipping and FFL fee's is worth right much to me.  Several hundred dollars at least.

Other thing is when you see one that's "Right" as long as the price is not ridiculous might as well buy. Few hundred up or down makes little difference.  Not like there is a Stevens 47 in good shape at every corner gun shop. Appreciation with a nice collectible takes care of the buying price.  Junk or needing repair another story rarely a good buy unless you can do the work yourself or it's real cheap.

Last if you bought a reproduction from CPA it would cost at least 500 dollars more than the asking price. Original is worth more than a reproduction.

One thing that no one has brought up is, what action is it? A 44 1/2 is worth at least $200 more than a 44, all other things the same, at least to me.

The next think to consideration is what would the dealer actually take for it? Offer $1400 and see what he comes back with. Then try to slpit the difference Smiley

I think that one shown at auction is a VERY good deal.

Not sure of the action, didn't realize they shared actions.
The block rolls back like my 44 but my impression was the action seemed longer then my 44.  The extractor wasn't at the 6 o'clock position either, it was off to the left a little.

The extractor makes it a 44, earlier than about 1901-2.

Definitly a 44 frame and unless it is all original without any refinish and in fine-excellent condition it's not worth anywear near $2K, probably more like 12-1300 at the high end with the sights you describe.

The $1610 on the auction site for Jake Simmons' rifle was for a 25-21, not a 22LR (desirable caliber, but you can easily shoot the 22 LR without too much hassle), and for a 44 1/2 action (worth more, but a 44 action is just dandy for 22 rimfires).  But there was an added 15 % buyers premium and $50 shipping.  That makes it a $1900 rifle.  So for an extra $100, you get to look at it and maybe take it home. If I had seen the described Stevens 47 in 22 LR, I would have bought it.

The rifle is there on consignment. I think I'll go look at it again and maybe make an offer in the mid teens see if the owner will bite.

To me if you can get it for anything under 2000 I would take it.  Double set trigers and the model are not that easy to find.

I agree! Under $2k would be tough to pass up, especially if I can look it over. The one listed at Auction is not only a centerfire (premium), but also a 44.5 (premium), and appears to be original finish.
I'd be happier with the one described if it could come down a few hundred, because you've probably got sales tax there too. That might add another $150 depending on your state.
Good news is they aren't going down in value, and if you have $100 bills to wave at them, you might get it down even more.
