What's the best type of pan to use for pan lubing cast bullets.

What about using a non-stick baking pan?

Not happy using a pyrex dish that I have used.

I use a cake baking pan I bought at WallyWorld for a few bucks. I holds enough rounds for a 60 shot match (including sighters).

Any plain metal pans I can find ...8.15x46R bullets - 182gr ... in one pan and no break or cracks in the cake

I use a fairly heavy baking pan liberated from my wife. The heavier weight seems to make the release easier.

I have read & re-read Steve Garbe's article in BPN magazine, about his way of pan lubing bullets.  There are a couple of problems with the article.  #1 He uses a large coffee can to hold the water.  The metal coffee cans haven't been made in years.  So much for that!  #2 He also uses a metal pie pan.  I just got back from Walmart.  No such thing as a metal pie pan anymore, unless you want one made from disposable aluminum foil!  So I ended up buying a couple of non-stick metal cake pans, and for my can to hold the water, I found an old gallon paint can that cleaned up nicely.  I'm planning on pan lubing some Gunn Modified 45 cal. bullets that are tapered from the base to the forward driving band, that is if everything goes well, and the 45 bullet casting will take place this Saturday.   Smiley Smiley  Tim

Tim,

Your problem is the high end store you go to!  Go to Dollar Tree and get a 9" square brownie pan for... wait for it... ONE DOLLAR, and you're good to go.  That's what I did.  Make sure you look for one that is perfectly flat on the bottom, the ones with the stiffening crimp cut down on bullet space capacity.

Tupperware sandwich size plastic boxes. Nice and flexy to get the firm lube out.

I use a small old cast iron skillet.  There is a #3 on the handle and it is about 6 1/2 inches across.  Works well for me.

Cast iron skillet for me too.  Has a pour spout about the right size and has a lid that can snuff out flash fires.  Little draft to the sides lets the cake go easy

I heat it with a Craftsman hand held heat gun just outside my shop door.

I have a pan like John Boys and I have been using it for several years. Just make sure you pickup one with the sides that are sloped or might have a hard time getting the lube cake out after the lube has cooled. My buddy made one with straight sides and the lube cake gets locked in. Some lubes don't tend to shrink much and on the other hand some do and in that case the straight sided cake pan might work.

I heat my lube in a double boiler and they hard to come by at times and found both of mine second hand at a garage sale or the likes. The bigger the better as if you pickup a small one the water evaporates faster then the lube melts and I have to friends that both had there lube pots catch fire.

Hello, I picked up a set (3) of 6" dia. flat bottomed pans with tapering sides...at wally world.    They look to be teflon coated.  These are nice for smaller batches, or experimental lube concocting..and they fit neatly inside a larger dia. pan as a dbl. boiler.

Putting the lube pan directly over the flame is a good way to burn the lube. I do it the easy way, using a Rubbermaid sandwich box with 50 standing bullets, the lube is melted in a double boiler & poured in. After it cools, I pull the sides of the box & pop the wax block out, then push the bullets out from the point & box them up. then put another 50 bullets in the same lube block & put the sandwich box in a metal pie pan (a 9" metal cake will work too) with a peice of 1/4" sheet metal, about 18" long, bent like a W, between the bullet lube box & the pie pan, fill the pan with water & heat till the lube melts & keep going.        ...MIKE...

I use what JohnBoy uses and bought it where Frog said to get it! And I am not sure what part of country clasicchecker is in, but All I but coffee in is metal cans. I need to can for utilitarian purposes!

I love the pan lube. very fast and very effective.

You probably know this, DON'T microwave your lube to melt it. Not sure what happens in that process but it DOES break it down some how.

Guys, the biggest problem I'm having is getting the cake out. What am I missing or doing wrong?

I use a 9 x 6 x 2 inch rubbermaid  drawer organizer,  holds 60  - 90 bullets depending on size.   I nuke my lube in the microwave until it melts and pour away.  I just have to be patient and wait until the lube pulls away from the sides.     Don't know if the microwave would be recommended for all lubes,  but mine has beeswax,  soywax and tallow.   So if I get hungry on the range,  I could eat the lube.  :-0
