8.15 X46R

I am working on getting a martini type schutzen shooting again.
I would like to know where I can find 8.15 X 46 R boxer primed brass.
Bullet mold
Dies
And most of all a chamber reamer ,I can borrow ,rent ,
Or chamber specs so I can make a reamer
I bought the action from , Gary  Staup, and he was supposed to bring the barrel to the next gun show ,I paid him for it ,and and 2 shows later they had a memorial table set up for him !
Guess I should have driven down ,and picked it up.
Thanks: Mark

I once owned an original Wehrmann's Gewehr and was able to buy RWS brass for it. Haven't looked for some time but with all the folks shooting Feurstutzen in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland I am sure it is still available.

Probably better off to have a custom old made after you slug the barrel. I used commercial cast bullets and they worked fine but I was not competing with the rifle.

I believe the dies I had were from RCBS....

Reamers are available from Heinz Henke in Germany but you may get it cheaper from the actual maker bu the name evades me just yet.

Although you did not ask, I found the reloading data for the 32-40 to work well with the 8.15X46

SS

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

I have some RWS cases, but re-formed 30-30 brass works just as well I have to thin the rims slightly for my Buechel Meister, but my break action German sporter will accept the 30-30 rim as is. My dies are CH-D.
The stop-ring bullet mould came from NEI and I am currently using 13.5 grn of 4227.

Fred's load is a good one. Will you breech seat or shoot fixed, if fixed stop ring or cylindrical bullet?

Here is a drawing from PTG, there version of a 8.15 X 46R. There price runs about $147 for a reamer with adjustable pilot.

What groove size will you use on your barrel? the front dimension needs to be adjusted for the groove.

I bought US-made, boxer primed 8.15 cases from an outfit called Quality Cartridges.  They worked well, if a bit pricey.  They were someplace in Maryland.

Some 8.15 rifles handle 30-30 cases well.  Some need to have the rim diameter reduced.  I have not yet seen any that need to have rims thinned (from the front).

If you wind up with a new barrel, you can set up your 8.15 the way you want it.  The problem with the old German or Austrian 8.15 chambers I have seen is the funnel-like throat.  You have an opportunity to avoid the throat problems.

You might check with John Taylor Machine for someone to do the chambering.  He relined and chambered a friends Martini in 8.15x46R, only I THINK they used a .32-40 dimensioned liner...

Hornady makes the most reasonable dies in 8.15x46R, and .30-30, or .32 Win Special form into 8.15x46R beautifully (trimming needed, of course).
Like Waterman said; some rifles need their rims worked on, some don't.  My Aydt didn't need anything, but I have a bolt action in 8.15x46R that needs the rims turned down.

As for molds; that's going to depend on what diameter you choose for your bore... 8.15x46R can vary widely between .314" and .320-ish.
Hell, in my Aydt, one groove is .3145, and another one is .316... so it can vary in one RIFLE!   Shocked

Hope this helps!

In Silvermans case, it looks like he's going to have to by a barrel blank and have it fitted to get a a barrel that will look like a original. That will be very, very  expensive. Best would be to find the original barrel but, he talks like that's not possible.

Second choice (talking realistically) would be to find a #3 or heavier 32/40 take off and fit it but, it will not look original. There are many things to consider here.

Most of the originals are long, approx. 740mm (29.133). They're octagon is tapered more than most American SS and have the the dove tailed mount on top (I wouldn't have that done myself) and the top flat is matted.

If he wants to shoot in competition (ISSA), it will have to closely adhere the the original style and chamber (i.e. 8.15x46 and not 32/40).

If the barrel is made, the rim diameter and thickness won't be a issue. Just run a shortened 30/30 through a 8.15x46 or 32/40 die and fire form.

For barrels, anything from .313 - .321 will do with a 14 - 15 twist. One of those .3195 Shilen's or a Ron Smith (you can choose any bore/groove/twist with a RS) would be perfect. But, make sure the chamber throat matches the groove diameter.

The forearm will have to have a original type contour to shoot ISSA, also (ASSRA should develop a class for these rifles).

Heres mine, which has the long octagonal barrel and the rib. The rib is used to take an open sight for field competitions, for which apertures were not allowed,

I've seen photos of Swiss Martini Schuetzen rifles with round barrels...also there were American gunsmiths like Christian Patt who used Hammerli Martini type actions with round and octagon and half octagon barrels.

I had tons of .32 Win. Spl. brass, so that's what I used to form my 8.15x46 cases.

I have a small collection of a dozen or so German schutzen & stalking rifles. I havn't fired a round down range in over 10 yrs, but I am getting the bug again. All the rifles are 8.18x46R and the groove dia. run from .314 to .323 in these rifles. I have always breech seated, but just befor putting the rifles up for 10 yrs I purchased 2 stop ring moulds & this spring I intend to try them. I had Jerry Barnett (RIP) make custom moulds for each rifle. I was never able to get the accuracy I expected. The chamber throats don't seem to work well with a breech seated bullet.
I purchased several boxes of RWS brass 20 yrs ago or so, it is very high quality and I would recommend it if it is still available. I always used Remington lrg pistol primers and about 13 or so gr of 4227. I have one Austrian take down martini schutzen it has a full oct. untapered barrel about equal to a Winchester #3. I guess I am rambling on, so I'll close
Good luck with your project
Mike
