A friend needs info( age ect) on a Stevens Tip Up in what appears to be .38 something. There are no markings other than j. stevens etc on the barrell. It does have a forearm and I have not seen any listed anywhere I've looked.

Well I've seen them in .38-55, and a friend has two in that caliber. But only way to really know what his is would be to chamber cast it with cerrosafe.

I don't recall ever seeing that thumb screw on the barrel release button before.

Looks like it is missing. Not unusual on these. It just unscrews and wouldn't be hard for it to fall off and get lost. Centerfire or Rimfire?

I thought the same thing at first but dont see threads on the end of it. Maybe some one turned a simple replacement or found something else that fit?

Also, how large is the frame? any way of getting a measurement across the action and length?

The barrel release is a smooth rounded push button. I'll try to measure the action tomorrow. I'm not at all familiar with these rifles so any help is appreciated.

Also measure the rim recess diameter and the diameter of the first part of the chamber.

If I have done this correctly the dimensions are as follows:

Barrel 26''
Width of action  1 and 9/16''
Length of action  4.5''
rim recess diameter  5/8''
chamber  7/16 inches

I have also included a close-up of the barrel release button that seem to be of some interest.

Looks like a replacement to me. All of them that I have seen had a knob threaded on the end.

The 7/16 chamber size would most likely make it a 38/55 or 38/50. For sure not any of the smaller 38's like the 38 XL or smaller.

Slug the barrel and see if a 38/55 will drop in.

Many years ago there was an example of this rifle floating around the Roanoke, VA area, IIRC. My froggie memory seems to recall it was a .38-50, maybe because it would have pre-dated the .38-55 by a few years??  I would guess a .38-50 black powder loading would be the extreme upper limit for that old design.

As for the push button for the barrel release, I would imagine it will unscrew to reveal a threaded end that once had what looked like the head of a screw, the shank of which had internal thread to fit the ones you have there.  Just a SWAG, but that's the way the ones I have seen and handled worked.

Just to stir the pot, any possibility of being a 38WCF?
