Roto Metals is not a friend to bullet casters. Their prices border on ridiculous.

If you know of a place that provides better pricing please share it with the group as they have always proven to be the best buy around when taking into consideration the free shipping. They also have freely provided donations for a variety of registered cast bullet shooting venues. That in itself makes them very friendly to the competitive cast bullet casting crowd.

Seems to me Roto's prices are fair and in line with other suppliers.

Scrap lead sold to the local yard will bring a dollar a pound. Tin a whole lot more.   Clean it up & alloy your self is not cheap to do. Propane alone adds a lot to the cost.  Point is no real cheap way to make good cast bullet alloy.

In any event 32/40 gets 36 bullets to the pound. At Roto's price it's 7 cents or so per bullet. Probably the cheapest part of my shooting. And good bullets are the most important.

I just placed an order for 60 lbs which dropped the price further.  I had trouble getting the code to work but I got it to work by typing in "save10".  I was a bit disturbed when they added on CA sales tax.  I guess they must have a physical presence in CA.  Who would have thought a business selling lead would get anywhere near CA.

Now if I can only find a reasonably priced source for black powder in CA I will be set.

Same with me, had to run save10 together to get the discount.  Going back to JLouis post that's exactly what he said, but have never been particularly good about following instructions.

They are in California San Diego I think, which is the center of W/C Shipyard activity and no doubt reason they are there. Zinc anodes shaft bearings etc.

Not trying to derail this thread in any way but want to revisit alloy.

One pound of tin and twenty pounds of soft lead melted together and fluxed creates 21 pounds of 20-1 lead tin alloy. Is that correct?

Seems to me that would be 1 in 21 ?   In 21 lbs of metal one pound of the alloy is tin

1/20 would be 1 pound of tin 19 pounds of Lead. One in 20

Might be wrong though

Seems to me that the title 20/1 is pretty clear. 20 lbs of lead mixed with 1lb of tin equals 20/1 alloy. the fact that you end up with 21lbs of alloy is just a sum of the parts. Merry Christmas. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

In all my reading on lead mixtures from "the old days" it would be 20 lb for lead mixed with 1 lb of tin or 4.67 % tin. I think some of the old Ideal manuals explain it, too.

I don't know about lead mix but 3 parts Gin 1 Part Vermouth & 3 Olives makes a good Martini

I'm imagining a 20lb Martini. Must be a bench gun. Or a really big cocktail. I think I'd prefer the latter.

CA may add tax to your lead, but gin is pretty cheap here (I'm visiting grandkids, so gin figures into the situation). Cool

Boats Roto Metals is in San Leandro, right next door to Oakland Ca. and just a tad East of San Francisco.
