Hello DMM,

John B. Buhmiller was a Barrel Maker of some note in the years immediately after WW2. He specialised in barrel making and did not fit or otherwise machine them. His barrels were very popular with the Benchrest and Varmint shooters for perhaps 30 or more years. His workshop and home was in Kalispell. Montana.

He was not a gunsmith in the usual sense of the word, and only in late life did he design and partially built a single shot Action. He unfortunately passed away before it was completed. (circa late 1970's)See Frank DeHaas's book, A Potpourri of Single Shot Rifles and Actions (1993).

It would appear that most of Buhmillers barrels were in the .22" high velocity centrefire rifle barrels although as a 'Custom Barrel Maker' he would made any calibre to order. According to Roy Dunlap  Gunsmithing (1950), he would  bore, rifle and contour a barrel to order, but did no more to it. It was up to the customer to have another person thread, fit and chamber it.

Had a Hi Wall in .22 Hornet with a Buhmiller barrel. Buhmiller was a big fan of Hi walls and single handedly responsible for many that were converted to varmint rifles. Some say that was sad, while those who owned one said they were wonderful guns! Mine shot extremely accurate, and although bulbous, the stocks were perfectly fitted.
I think I read in an old magazine years ago where Buhmiller and some friends tried to blow up an original Hi Wall action to test it's strength, and never did blow it, even when chambered in .30-06 and the barrel plugged, then fired with a live round.

Great article Frank; thanks for linking it! I've always heard Buhmiller was a very accomplished gunsmith, but best known for his smallbore barrels.
I've owned two Buhmiller barreled singles in .22 Hornet and .22LR, and both shot better than I could hold.
