In one of the responses, reference was made to the Arsenal Bullet.  When speaking of the Arsenal bullet, are you talking about the bullet nose, the hollow base, all of the above, ???

I have two moulds that throw nominal 405 grain bullets, one is HB the other PB, so I was wondering.

Thank you.

All of the above except most modern bullets are not exact copies of the Government bullet, Close  though.  I don't like a hollow base too much trouble to cast. If the bullet is fitted to the individual rifles bore hollow base is not as important as it was to service ammunition that had to fit anything in use.

Think you will find most modern shooters use a plain base with the weight groves and nose profile of the Arsenal bullet

Interesting read.  Thanks.  Good collection of comments in this thread, thanks to all.

I got diverted to the .405Win after posting this question and recently picked up a CSA in 45-70 - so this thread caught my eye.

I worked up loads for my friend's wife's Trapdoor so was favoring lighter bullets. I had 300 grain and 350 grain ones sized .460. The 350 shot better than the 300 and liked 28 grains of 5744.

Hey Cat, A lot of what the guys are telling you is good. If you're shooting the lighter cast bullets, ie 300/320/350, sixty (honest) years of trying every load and powder out there, including most of what has been said here, With the light end, 300 gr pushed by 18 gr 2400, is my old standby. With the 320/350, 12/13 gr Unique works nice for me. By nice, I mean, it's accurate and doesn't HURT this olde mans shoulder. The old 405 has always worked good with 24/2400. That one starts to hurt unless you've got a fairly flat butt plate. Take your time and see what your rifle likes.
