Stevens 14 1/2 Little Scout

Over the past few years I have developed an interest in the old single shot boys rifles. The first one that I bought was a Stevens Favorite 1915 model 27 (octagon barrel 22LR). That little rifle was well worn on the outside but well kept on the inside. I added a repro tang sight and was amazed with how well the rifle shot. I was hooked! Since then I have acquired several Stevens single shots and Remington #4, #6 rolling block 22LRs. They are a ball to shoot and down right a pleasure to handle. I have looked for some time to find a Stevens Little Scout #14 1/2. Have found a bunch of them in mostly poor condition. Up till last Saturday I had never seen one that didn't have a crack grip/tang area in the stock, or a bore that looked like a sewer pipe. While at the Syracuse, NY gun show I was shocked to find one that appears to be in unfired condition! With the exception of a few scratches on the butt stock it looks like it just came out of the box! The bluing is 99.9%, the color case on the action is as well. When I checked the bore with a Hawkeye bore scope It looked like it was rifled yesterday! I took the time to check if the barrel had been religned, but there is not indication that this is the case. I was thrilled to find this little gem in this condition. There is one thing that is a little puzzling to me and I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. On the action there is what appears to me to be the Savage trade mark of SVG in a circle. However the barrel reads the Stevens A&T Co. Would like to hear your thoughts on this. I can post photos if anyone is interested.  Thanks, Sendaro

The Favorite, the Marksman and the Little Scout were the Stevens models that Savage continued to produce after they took over the company.

Great find! I have been collecting Stevens for years and finding any boys rifel in pristine condition is tough to do. As I recall Savage bought out Stevens after WWI and started puting the Savage logo on them at that time. Now you need a Little Scout # 14. They are a little harder to find. The fun never ends!

You are right! I don't recall seeing very many of these little 14s. I'm not blown away by their looks.
I'm looking for a rear sight for a Stevens 40. Keep me in mind if you come across one. it is a flip up ladder type and has a small flat spring that sets on the barrel flat.
Maybe I should post a few photos of my 14 1/2 Little Scout. What do you think?

Photos are definately welcome. Try Gunbroker and EBay for the sight. I am acutaly looking for one of those mysef. What caliber is your 40? I have a nice complet one in .32RF. Bought a stock for one a while back. Ended up buying the rest of the gun from the guy. It was rough but the price was right. Had John Taylor reline it and just sent it back to him to make a new extractor. I will have more in it than it is worth but It will be a good shooter and I hate to see a gun parted out that can be brought back. This one has the wrong front sight on it so you need the rear and I need the front. Will let you know if I run across the set.

That is about as nice as they get. It would be difficult to find one in any better shape. Great find.

It is definately an upgrade from the one I have. Mine is decent and has a very good bore so I am happy with it. Would much sooner have yours though.

Sorry that it has taken me this long to get back to you. Have had a few family issues that needed to be addressed.
I paid $300.00 for it at the Syracuse Gun Show. Yes I did pay a lot for it, but how often can one be found in this condition.
I've been over it and over it, and it appears to me that it may never have been shot. Using a Hawkeye bore scope to inspect the bore it looks like it was made last week. I can find no evidence of it being shot.
Have a Stevens #16 Crack Shot on the way that maybe in nearly as good a shape as this 14 1/2.

You did not over pay. I would jump on one that nice for that price. It is hard to pay too much when they are in that condition. I have guns that nice that I have paid what I thought was a lot of money for and have never regreted it. I have some less than excellent guns that I bought cheap that I have regrets about buying. You did well.

Slumlord44, I'll have to agree with you that I have bought a few guns in the past that were in less condition and thought at the time it was a bargain. I know can see that in most cases condition is very important to a well assembled collection.
I have been a cartridge collector for over 50 years now. It all started as a child at a gun show with my Dad. He would allow me to purchase a few cartridges and then I'd read about them and learn their history. It wasn't long before his friends and hunting buddies were bringing me cigar boxes with odds and ends of old cartridges. There are so many in the collection at present I have an inventory on excel to keep track of what I have. Mind you that I'm a single cartridge collector.
I don't expect to collect a huge number of rifles over the remainder of my life, but now believe that collecting the best examples that I find and can afford is the right way to go.

I have a Stevens model 16 Crack Shot on the way that appears to be in great condition. Do you think that the form members would like to see a few photos?I should have it by Weds.

We always like to see pictures of prety old guns here. Like them almost as much as prety girls of any age and prety old cars.

Should have the little Stevens #16 Crack Shot by Tuesday evening. Will take photos and post them. Should also post some photos of the Stevens #40 18" barreled 22 LR that is in my collection.
Spent the best part of the day finishing a bedding job on one of my more modern singles shots. A Remington 40X in 22LR that I have just re-barreled with a Krieger barrel. If the weather is good in the morning I will take it to the shooting house for test firing. Here is a photo of the 40X Benchrest rifle (yes it is a single shot).

Almost forgot that I did take a few photos of my Stevens model 40 with the 18" barrel. Here they are for your viewing pleasure. All that I have done to this fine old Stevens is replace the rear sight with the correct one and replace the broken firing pin. It now shoots and has a new lease on life. Never though that I would find the right rear sight for this model 40, but somethings are just meant to be. I'm thankful. You can see in the photos that it is in very good condition for it's age.

Well the Stevens Crack Shot #16 that I acquired from an auction house arrived yesterday. The weather here today was such that shooting a few photos out of doors was not going to happen, so I took a few photos of it in my shop. The targets that are in the photos were not shot with this rifle. They were just something handy for a background. The rifle is in really nice condition for being between 98 and 111 years old. I found the color on the action truly outstanding. Nothing on this old Crack Shot #16 has been fooled with. The  bore does have some pitting and there are some spot were there was surface rust at one time. The action does have some pin prick pits, but not much. I'm sure that the varnish is the org. and there is no cracks in the stock. I was very happy to find on in this condition. Hope that you all enjoy the photos.                                                                                                 By the way Slumlord 44 what does having Taylor reline a Stevens 40 barrel cost? I have one that has a 12" barrel that I'm thinking about starting a restoration project on.

That is about as good as they get. I have one that is close to that condition. It is in .32 Long with a mint bore. My .22 is not nearly as nice.  Will dig up John's bill and let you know. TJ liners are sold by the inch so yours would probably be a little higher.

Slumlord44, I had Craig Rittenhouse line my Stevens 44 in 22LR with I believe it was a TJ liner. I'm very pleased with the way that rifle shoots. Craig knows what he is doing. I had John Taylor make a spring for an old Stevens tang sight for me. John did a great job. I hear nothing but good things about John Taylor, and would use him to do some of the restoration work on the Stevens 40. There is no hurry on that price, but would like to know when you have a chance. Know anyone making reproduction tang sights for the 40 1/2 Stevens?
