.40-65 22" Badger Barrel Performance?

Hi,
Does anyone have experience with the above combination using Black Powder? Will accuracy be lost as range increases?
Barrel is installed in a '75 cSharps that is offered to me.
Comments, thoughts?
Thanks,

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

In my opinion it's not a good choice for BP. Might work OK for smokeless, but you'll have lots of powder burning after the bullet has already left the barrel, and both velocity and accuracy will suffer.

do you know what the twist rate it.  that is critical.  It controls what bullet weight you can use most effectively.  In order to get complete burn of BP you need to bottle it up in the barrel,  heavier bullets can help, as can finer grade powders, longer barrels, or duplexing with other powders.   With a barrel that short I'd guess the odds are against you, but with the right combination you just might be able to make it work.  But you gotta know the twist to start with.

I have an early test model Miroku Highwall,  (pre-BPCR/creedmoor) with a sporter weight /length badger fast twist barrel.  I shot it some with BCPR type loads when I got it but since there was no BPCR activity here locally I switched to smokeless for ASSRA matches.   I've not shot it for several years but am considering getting it back out for the Buffalo matches next Fall.

I believe Badger made that barrel with a 1-16 twist.

Nice CSharps near me with wonderful wood in 40/70.  24 inch barrel keeps me from buying it.  Would not be a useful gun for Black powder Target shooting

When I shot an original Trapdoor carbine a lot found it really suffered when loading with Black compared to a full rifle. Arsenal years ago used wads to cut the charge and make a special carbine load, Recoil was a factor but mostly to shoot in that short barrel. Wolf's book has a lot of detail on the carbine load if interested.

Thanks for the replies. I had my doubts, just needed some input to help
convince me.
Boats, I have an original trapdoor carbine, and I have used the Wolff book for loads for it and my trapdoor rifle. Good information.
