Journal/Log book ?

Print Post
When I shot M14's on the 80th Div (MTC) rifle team we were issued a log book.  It contained several pages of basic marsksmanship including courses of fire, correct range procedure, target dimensions, windage in angular minutes and inches for a particular ammo, formulas for windage, chart showing angle of flag and mph, AND THEN the log book portion where we had specific pages for each course of fire and where we logged our elevation/windage/call and value for EVERY shot.  (and other things like light direction, wind direction and sight picture, reloading info.  (USAMTU #1 Form 4 dtd 1 OCT 84)

DOES anyone publish, or has anyone developed such for ASSRA matches?

Is there any interest in putting one together?

My curiosity here comes from having been challanged and encouraged by Bill Davis (Boats).  While shooting (at Cavalier Rifle and Pistol club) their monthly "Ram Bash" Bill and I had some short but intense converstations about the 5 principles (Equipment/Position/Condition/Strategy/Mental)  he mentioned here a few days or so back.  In focusing on those I improved my score from 20 of 40 hits the previous time to 28 of 40 (at 200 yards).  The conclusion I drew was that we teach OURSELVES what to do better.  If we are fortunate to have a tutor, the process is accelerated.

Looks like I'll have to update my mailing list.

Yep, CW, I'm about 20 miles from Grinnell, but am a newcomer to the area...only 24 years since escaping from the Peace Loving People's Socialist Democratic Republic of California!   Wink

Just a wee tiny misspelling in the email address..  you wrote "wiright" not "wright".

Might have to pick up one of those score/nbote books myself...
I fumble with a notebook at the range, but it would be nice to have one to pair with my rifle, like I do with my Highpower rifle data-books.

I have used all sorts of log books. When I had my first CPA built in 1992 worked up a single data page in Word using the Table function. Then took it to a book binder and had a book made up with the rifle's name and caliber on the spine. This is not real expensive look, for lawbook or bible binders in your area.

It's nearly full now after  almost 18 years every series of shots recorded with load location weather number of rounds fired  results comments sight settings etc logged. Pretty useful but got way to complicated when I started switching barrels and calibers not to mention 3 stock configurations and several sight/scope combinations.  I may not go that detailed again.  Be interesting book to have if I ever sold that rifle though.

Last few years have been keeping a word journal on my laptop with every match and practice session, a brief or long paragraph depending on what the situation was. Not so much data as performance oriented. It's real useful. For example I can refer to every missed shot and if I wanted to could make a pie chart with why I  missed each shot in 19 formal matches over the last 8 months.  Practice not as detailed but the general trends identified

It's real useful if you believe in self taught and self directed training.
