Sharps (Pedesoli) 1874 Smokeless Reloading

I recently purchased a used Sharps 1874 replica in 45-70 made by Pedersoli, imported by Uberti, and it has Stoeger Accokeek MD on the barrel.  This is my 1st replica gun which was bought for my son to use.  I reload for several modern firearms and thought I would reload for this one also.  I read on some other BB where I could safely use the 1895 Marlin loads in the many reloading guides.  I selected IMR 4198 and a Hornady 350 JRN bullet.  I loaded some bullets using the IMR data, using the lowest setting, which resulted in 47 gr.  After I was finished, I looked in the Hornady data and the lowest setting shows 32 gr. with a max of 45.3 gr.  When I went to the Pedersoli website, it shows that I should not use anything but the Trapdoor loads.  Given that I do not want to blow up my son, can anyone help me with all of this conflicting information I have.  Thanks.

Go to this website and scroll to the bottom for smokeless powder Trapdoor loading data ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Another good reference book to buy is Lyman's 4th Edition for Casting... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

JRN = Jacket Round Nose? Why?  If so, you are starting off on the wrong foot.  Use lead cast bullets only!

PS:  Original gunpowder reloads shoot mighty spiffy in a Sharps.  May want to consider shooting black powder!

John Boy,

I am sure I got off on the wrong foot, but I suspect it has more to do than just with the choice of bullet.  I selected these bullets because it was what was in all of my reloading manuals.  But why only cast bullets?
