I have two 8.15 x46s--a Schuetzen rifle and a top-break German hunter. For 200yds in the Schuetzen rifle, I have always used 14.5grn of 4227, with the NEI "stop ring" bullet. Good enough for 2nd place in the recent Historic Arms meeting at Bisley. Most of my shooting with the top-break rifle is at 50m and I use 13grn of 4227. I entered the Running Deer competition with it and realised at the last minute that I did not have enough of the heavier load and so had to use my 50yd load. The bullet speed was too slow to work the electronic target indicator. A scorer was sent down the range to mark manually for me and he reported that the bullets were showing signs of tumbling, (the Running Deer range is 100yds). I won't be loading any more of the 13grn rounds.

13.5 grains IMR 4227 with all bullets I've tried works best. 150 thru 210 grain bullets.   German Schutzens are not supposed to be tack driving bench rest rifles. I think they can be if one wants to spend the time doing the load development.  If my groups are about 2-3 inches at 200 from the bench I figure thats good enough for me and my awful hand shooting.

The best target I ever shot with my Stahl rifle from the bench was a 248 at 200. That was with a Hoch Pope style 200 grain tapered bullet, no wad, bullet breach seated. 13.5 grains IMR 4227. The bullets keyholed through the target very bad.  Most very bad through the 25 ring.  The target was shot with the diopter and a makeshift aperture in the front sight.

Now I use a Frank Zika stop ring bullet at 190 grains in the Stahl.  Shoots about three inches at 200 from the bench.

4227 seems to be the bomb in 8.15X46. My gun has a .314 groove and a 14.2 twist, 31.5 lg barrel. Here is my data,

I use a modified 173 gr 30 cal bullet, 1.055 lg, that casts .314 with 24/1, I opened the base band to .316 and shoot it BSed. Testing done at 40 deg.

I never tried above 13.0 gr but, it's worth a shot I think Smiley
My ES's weren't very good but, recoil was mild.

13.0 gr 4227
F150 primer
Ave vel. 1356
SD 18.9
ES 55
5 shot group @ 100 .62

12.0 gr 4227
F150 primer
ave vel. 1280
SD 20
ES 48
5 shot group @ 100 .94 / 4 shots in .40

Tipped bullets at 11.0 gr and 1165 fps.

All groups shot with a 24X scope.

I have one of the evil bolt actions in this caliber.  It is a scale down 71 action hunting rifle.  i am using lyman 308291 opened up to .314 diameter with a .320 stop ring.  it works well with 14.0 grains of 4227.

Gentlemen, thanks for your input and recommendations. Based on reading Sharpe's Complete Guide to Reloading and Propellant Profiles I decided to range test 13.0 & 13.5gr of SR4759, lot Oct 21, 1993 ... found on a dusty shelf at our local reloading supplier who sells out of a chicken coop Smiley
* Sharpe's updated 3rd Edition of the 1937 First Edition lists one powder for the 180gr 8.15x46R - 13gr SR4759
* Propellant Powder, Fifth Edition, has a nice write up on SR4759 ... single base, porous surface - greatly improves ignition in low  pressure loadings.  Per John Wooters, article author, - Quote:
"in my opinion, the single best propellant ever marketed for cast bullets in rifles, etc ... the result is very uniform ballistics from shot to shot, even at low velocities."
 In the loading data table: 32-40WCF - 13.5gr with the 175gr Lyman 319295.  The article lists load data for 23 calibers from the 218 Bee to 45-90!

The other load for the 316180 BACO (178.5gr actual) stop ring bullet is going to 'shirt tail' on J Lewis's excellent 300-MP loading results.  The test charge will be 12.0 and 12.5grs.  Wish me luck!

Good Luck John Boy!

It is my hopes the 300MP provides you with the same results it has provided to me and I am anxious to see your results.

J - I'll never be able to duplicate your targets using a diopter but here's hoping the holes are all in the center and 10 ring!

J, I have confidence in the rifle, the loading data and on a good day - me.  Sure wish I had a lead sled though to truly determine the accuracy of all three!
Just came up from the basement:
* 40 rounds for both SR4759 charges - done
* 40 rounds for both 300-MP charges - done
Weather looks good for tomorrow: Aydt, chrono, laser lyte, and the rest of the stuff ready to go.  I have primed the Mrs about the need for the project, so any To Do's should not be an impediment
