Bertram or Jamison Brass? (for .25-20 Single Shot)

Howdy,

New to the forum, but not new to single shots.  Preparing to load for .25-20 Single Shot in a High Wall.  Bertram and Jamison brass available.

Mixed reports about Bertram brass (a lot of unhappy people). No reports about Jamison.  Experiences? (understandably not limited specifically to this caliber).

Thanks.

Our club we shoot a lot of Pistol Caliber Lever Silhouette. Most buy 32/20 from Starline then size it down to 25/20. Starline is very good brass.

You have to order from Starline in advance, Don't charge your card untill production run is finished. Near as I can tell all the re-sellers of Starline  brass do the same thing, then jack up the price with guys that need it quick

Boats, Starline doesn't make 25-20 Single Shot brass or anything that it can be made from.

Spitpatch, I would go with Jamison, given those two choices.  One other option, if you have a lathe, and more time than money, would be to form it from .223.  I believe that the archives have instructions on doing this.

The Jamison 25/20SS brass is excellent. I've been shooting it for a few months. It's very well made and in my opinion, better than the G&H brass of the 30's and 40's. I have both.

It's thicker and has a little less capacity.

Spitpatch,
I just received 100 cases of 25-20 S.S. Jamison brass yesterday. I have not had a chance to load any, but did have time to inspect each piece. 99 of them were perfect, and one looked like it had slipped slightly in the forming die. It was slightly more compressed at the web than normal. I could send it back, but will mark it and use it for a fouler shot for fixed ammo. In reality it will probably fire form and be fine, I just have enough that I can afford to be cautious. The Jamison brass appears to be excellent and has little dimensional variation. I will certainly buy more.

I will have to go with those in the past that have said that Bertram brass in .25/20SS is practically worthless. It's been quite a few years since I bought a 100 cases and maybe someones newer experience will show they've fixed whatever the problem was.

After 5 firings I had 20 of the 100 that had split from the shoulder area toward the middle. Considering the price that's pretty expensive shooting.

I have no experience with Jamison brass altho the reports I hear are it's the way to go.

Before Jamison brass was available I found out how to make .25/20SS cases out of .223 brass. I breech seat and I've found those cases will last over 250 shots with the primer pockets getting loose as a cause for rejection. Making them out of military brass they last indefinitely.

I've generally had bad luck with Bertram brass. I do not plan on using them for anything unless there are no alternatives.  With that said, my original Stevens came with a bunch of Bertram brass in .25-20 and they are holding up well. But then again I'm using black powder not smokeless.

TDW and all:

Got 60 rounds of Jamison, very good product at first glance of 5 or 6.  Before I ordered a shellholder, I went through my pile (40 years of conglomerated garage sale/gunshow accumulation).

Found a Number 10!

Intend to use WCF dies to neck size, see how that works before taking the plunge for SS dies.

Thanks for the help!

I refuse to buy Bertram brass for any of my reloading. After buying 40 cases for my .25-21 Stevens and having 30 of them split on the first firing of a very mild load.
I talked with Bertram about the issue and requested either good brass or my money back, and got neither. I wont use their junk ever.

You will do just fine with a quality set of 25-20 WCF (Repeater) dies for NECK SIZING the Jamison 25-20 Single Shot cases.

Let us know what loading data you will be using and which bullet style/weight works out for you.

Happy !/4 bore shooting to you.
