On July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ; 148 years ago, a series of decisive battles were waged to save our Union from internal division on the farm fields surrounding the hamlet of 2,400 named Gettysburg.

At Gettysburg on these three hot summer days in July more men actually fought and more men died than in any other battle before or since on North American soil.

On day 3 of the massive engagement, the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg came.  General George E. Pickett made a desperate assault on Union lines with 14,000 Confederate troops across an open field towards Cemetery Ridge.  Pickett's men had a mile to go under heavy artillery and musket fire.  In 50 minutes, 10,000 men in the assault became casualties.  Confederate forces reached the Union line, but failed to breach it and the Battle of Gettysburg was over.

The one mile tract of land that Pickett's men marched over and fought for is today truly " hallowed ground ".  It is an awesome place to experience first hand.  Should you be coming to the up coming Columbia S.V. Matches in Thurmont Maryland, this will be a great opportunity for anyone interested to experience and stand upon hallowed ground.  The battle fields are a short 19.5 miles north of Thurmont.
