Austin Powder Company Test Continued

Picture of the Austin Company Powder
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

To complete the tests, will load 4ea 38-55 rounds with 40gr of the Austin Powder.  Will run the rounds over the chronograph.  Then for the 4 shots (sure wish I had a pound of the powder  Grin) ... will weigh the foul, dry it and compare the percent of residue to the loaded powder charge.  This will really support or refute that the Austin Powder is Curtis's & Harvey Powder ... which I'm betting that it is because of the good test attributes so far

Having Wildman's Austin Powder, I became more curious about the Meteor Powder I have.  Is it or not C&H?  So, off to the basement again

Austin PowderDensity Test
0.998g/cc ... Powder Vibrated to settle in volume measure

Meteor Powder Density Tests
Powders Vibrated to settle in volume measure

FFg - 1.046g/cc ... difference to Austin Powder = 0.048g/cc
FFFg - 1.052g/cc ... difference to Austin Powder = 0.054g/cc

Austin Powder Test
[b][u]Grain Ratio Test  sieves

10 mesh - No Hold
20 mesh - 40.25% Hold
30 mesh - 58.8% Hold
40 mesh - 1.02% Hold
50 mesh - Trace

Meteor Powder Ratio Test
FFg
10 mesh - No Hold ... difference to Austin Powder = 0%
20 mesh -56.7% Hold ... difference to Austin Powder = +12.45%
30 mesh - 40.5% Hold .. difference to Austin Powder = (-18.3%)
40 mesh - 2.8% Hold ... difference to Austin Powder = +1.78%

FFFg
10 mesh - No Hold
20 mesh -No Hold
30 mesh - 63.4% Hold
40 mesh - 27% Hold
50 mesh - 9.6% Hold
60 mesh - Trace
Difference to Austin Powder = Major Differences in Grain Size Ratio Percentages

Appearance & Grain Shape
The Austin and Meteor powders look exactly the same

Conclusions:
1.  The Austin Powder is FFg, not FFFg
2.   Very Strong Possibility that the Meteor Powder made in 1973 after Nobel bought C&H and both powders were made in Ardeer, Scotland ... is C&H production powder

So, to further affirm or refute both powders are C&H, when I do the range test, reloads will be Austin Powder and Meteor FFg Powder

I tried the Curtis and Harvey in my 38-55, so far the results look pretty dismal. The first 5 loads were 40 grs. results were about 4 inches with 3 within an inch and a half. Second group is close to six inches, this was 43grs, using this same 317 gr bullet. Using 43.1 grs. of swiss11/2 I can get most groups around 1 inch . The curtis and harvey powder is much bulkier than swisss. the same 43 grs. with curtis and harvey fill the case about a quarter inch more than the 11/2 swiss. Next weekend I will try lighter loads with the curtis and harvey. I need to get hold of a chrony to check the speeds . The swiss loads clock around 1100  fps with extream spreads of 10 fps. All shooting is done off bags at 100 yards. john

At least the label on the C&H powder is post 1963. First year for Zip Codes.
