If you can slug your barrel a post the groove diameter, I may be able to help you.

What has been working very well for me is to use a bullet that just slips into a fired case neck. The closer the fit to the inside of the neck the better it will shoot.  .321 bullets shoot excellent in my .316 barrel. They also shoot excellent in my .321 barrel.

.316 dia bullets lead the .316 barrel bad.

I'm talking about accuracy for OH shooting not BR.  For BR, better to breech seat a groove diameter bullet. .001 over groove dia will shoot good too.

Both my 8.15X46r's are 14 twist and like a 190 bullet when shooting fixed ammo.

The Hudson 319-289 is a very good one.

I purchased the correct "stop-ring" mould from NEI. I have some RWS cases but also use cases formed from 30-30 brass. After the first firing, the cases are not re-sized but simply pushed in by hand up to the stop-ring. Lube is liquid alox.
14.5grn of 4227 seems to be the optimum load.

Unfortunately, the old Hudson bullets are obsolete unless one has the molds***.  Loading data from the 1958 Lyman Handbook:
319273 (tapered) 10.5gr Alliant 2400
319289 (straight side) 12.8gr Alliant 2400
*** - Unless someone can find Bob @ unobtainomite.com and he goes back casting old bullets  Wink

Have shoot the Hudson bullets with accuracy:
319273: 13.6gr IMR 4759 ... if shot as fixed cartridge, seat the bullet to the bottom of the last GG band with a light crimp.  My definition of 'light' is it takes 2-3 whacks with a kinetic puller to dislodge the bullet
319289: 13.6gr IMR 4749
(Both bullets are a nominal 184gr with 1:30 alloy.  Seat both rounds with the bullet nose touching the leade.  Exception is if the 319273 is breech seated)

As for other loads with current production bullets :
* NEI 86A 318-175gr: 11gr IMR 4227 ... very good groups @ 200yds
* Rifle groove dependent - the BACO 316180 or BACO 320180: 13.5gr Alliant 300-MP, average velocity 1240 fps.  For better 200yd accuracy, increase charge to 14grs
* I too finger seat these bullets

John Boy: Interesting that you find 11grn of 4227 adequate. In addition to my Buechel shuetzen rifle, I have a German break action hunting rifle. This is a lightweight rifle and I reduced the charge of 4227 (still with the 175grn NEI bullet) to 13 grn. I shot running dear with it at Bisley last July and the velocity was not high enough to work the electronic scoring. The guy who scored it manually for me reported that the bullets were tipping---this at 100yds. Have since tested same batch of ammo on my home range and all appears to be OK!

Fred, I also found it interesting that your load was up to 14.5gr.  I shot it last month, 100-200, and 11gr does sound awful slow - but the hits were close and consistent. I do have to admit - been considering to raise the powder charge

I've been playing with 12-12.5 4227 and the 160 stop ring/SPG lubed Win sm pistol primer.

Scope sighted, 100 yard, BSed 173 gr spitzer. At top, 11 gr 4227, 1165 fps, most of the bullets are tipped.

12 gr 4227, 1280 fps, 13 gr 4227, 1356 fps.

I couldn't find my chrono results for the 10.5 gr of 296 and I couldn't find my target for the 12 gr load of 4227 but, I have the chrono sheet marked that it was .94 with four in .4.

Who makes a good "stop-ring" bullet mould in the 175 to 190 gr. range?
I looked on the NEI website and did not find any listed.
Who else makes them?

Look harder---it is there in the "old" catalogue. I know, because I bought one!

NEI's #86A is described as a .318" dia., 175 gr. Schuetzen stop ring bullet on their website.  You have to look at the old catalog section, by bullet diameters.

Pretty sure Hoch will make a stop ring bullet mold.

The 319-289 bullet mold I use is a Hoch.  Any custom maker should be able to make a stop ring mold.

Call Steve Brooks.

  Jim @ Buffalo Arms: 316180 and 320180.  I just finished casting 200 of the 320180 bullets.  7 parts Pb : 3 parts Lyman #2 for a 9.8 Bhn.  Base - .319 and 182.8 - 183.4grs
