Ballard at auction today...

I went to an auction today that had a few old guns.  The most interesting was a Ballard (sporting?) rifle.  The old rifle had seen better days.  I couldn't determine the caliber, but I think it was in the .32 range.  The bore was toast, as in burnt toast, the stock was good for its age with some splits that could have been easily repaired, and the metal was pitted somewhat overall.   In my estimation it was a parts gun, wall hanger, or money hole restoration project.  It sold for about $350.  I was visiting with someone when it sold, and I can only remember that it was in the mid 300 range.  I would have paid 200 to 250 as a hanger, but it went up pretty quickly.  My question here is -  based on my description, what was the value of this one?  I got home and looked at Gun Broker. and there were two in somewhat similar condition.  One is at $400 and the other is at about $800.  So, did I pass up a deal or what?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'm going to guess in a worse case scenario, which would be a #2 Ballard in .32 Long CF/RF caliber. If this was a complete gun, with no missing or broken parts, then yes you missed a deal at anything under $400. Over that amount I'd have to see it and judge it's condition before commenting.

The trouble with auctions is that you never know how high the other guy is willing to go. You might not have missed anything if he was willing to spend more than you, so don't beat yourself up over it.

I agree, that 400 dollars is about right, by the description of this Ballard at the OGCA it would have an asking price of about 500 and sell for 400-425.   ledball

Value of burnt toast?

Hmmm.

Not me.

Ugly on outside is OK by me, IF the bore and trigger are good.

Stick to YOUR value - in time you'll find one to your liking.
