I finally found a place to veiw a Stevens catalog!

 On the: For sale/Trade part of this forum, at the top is: Intresting links. The last post right now is by "22match". He gives a link to his website. It's a research library of old gun catalogs. You can veiw them there or download or copy them for free.

I looked through the 1907 Stevens catalog. 157 pages. Really fun to look through and I was able to answer a lot of my questions right there.
Thank you 22match!

Frank, If your frame is marked 44 without the 1/2 then it should be a 44 not a 44 1/2. Does the block swing instead of dropping straight down?

It's definitely and positively 44 1/2. The only other 44 1/2 that I have is a Brisen so, I have nothing that is original to compare the markings to. I do own three 44's so, I know the difference.

Frank,

I think in JJ Grant's books, he often mentioned encountering Stevens that had been marked incorrectly, as well as often having missing marks.

With all the parts changing and other mods that have occurred while passing through different hands over almost 100 years, even if the rifle looks original and correct, who really knows for certain?

Thank you, BP,
I may have a FrankenStevens  Smiley, nothing seems to fit.The part that I'm most curious about is the 49 stamped high on the face. I've never seen how a 49 is stamped. I have a  44 thats a Model 45 but, the 45 is in the lower face of the frame. I can't believe that it's a 49 frame unless someone put a straight DST tang on it plus, from what I've read, the 49's were engraved.

breech block screw -----> o               49

                                     44               O

Does anyone have any factory reworked frames with extra markings?

Frank

Frank-- there has been a reproduction stag head butt plate for sale on  either e-bay or gunbroker.com for several months.

Didn't the guy who had all the single shot action kits have a 44 1/2 kit this may be another brain fart but I think he did. Maybe this is where this action comes from.

I have a 44 1/2 action that is not marked as such. It has only a 0 stamped on the front of the action. The barrel is stamped with a 2 and the serial number is 1xxxxx. They apparently made a lot of them and this one is in 25-20 single shot. It has a curved buttplate.
