Slumlord,
I'd like to see yours with the side plate removed.

My 4-screws have a link between the lever and the breech block like the later 44's. However, the patent for the side plate shows no link and the block being propped up by the end of the lever. I wonder if the 5-screws are like the patent design.

Regards,
Ron

Beautiful rifle. I was not aware there was a 4 and 5 screw model. Need to do some research since I already bought one. Anybody have the awnser to my question about the 44 barrel on the Sideplate rifle? Minor fitting or major project? Apparently it can be done because the rifle I bought has had it done and it works. As I remember, the 44 is basicly an improved sideplate so it makes sense that the barrel could be made to fit. Seller says it shoots fine. I will find out soon enough.

You'll have to measure the 44 barrel to see if it can be turned to fit. Some, if not all, side plates have unthreaded barrels.

Back in the day, Stevens would re-barrel rifles sent to them. If yours has a 44 barrel that's an old re-barrel, that's probably it. I'd like to know if there are any Stevens-Pope barreled side plates. Talk about a rare beast!

Regards,
Ron

You'll have to measure the tang of the 44 barrel to see if it can be turn to fit your action. Some, but maybe not all, side plates have unthreaded barrels.

Also, back in the day Stevens would rebarrel

There is a .25-20 on Gunbroker with a minimum bid of $4,749.  GB#219996547

In my opinion the price is too high. For almost $5,000 it needs to have a solid 80-90% bright blue, case, and varnish (and a perfect bore which he does not address). The pictures are crappy but it doesn't appear to be a 80%+ rifle.

For some good information on these Sideplates, there was an article by John Dutcher in THE GUN REPORT magazine from the early-mid 1990's. I don't remember the exact issue but it had a Sideplate pictured on the cover.

The barrel has been fitted to the gun and works fine. Will report on the details when it gets here. Hoping the end of this week but possibly not until next week.

I thought that somone here might have been the other bidder. I don't mind being bid against by another member here. If I loose it will go to a good home. Gun will be here tomorrow. Would have gotten it today but I was not here when UPS arrived. I will make it a point to be home tomorrow. Hope there are no disapointments. I got him to agree to a 2 day inspection period just in case. Been looking for one for some time. There is a small frame Favorite side plate on GB now that I assume you are watching. My only concern with this one is when I asked the seller if there was any rust or pitting in the bore, he gave me a song and dance and never realy answered my question.

The Sideplate arrived today and was as prety much as described. The original .25 Stevens barrel has an excellent bore after a little routine cleaning. No problems there. Had problems getting .25 round to chamer properly. Finaly noticed that the extractor extendes into the chamber slightly. Apparently the extractor is for the .22. I was wondering if there were two extractors. Now I know there was only one. Anyone know if there is a source for Sideplate extractors or if the 44 extractor will work? The one in the rifle fits both barrels perfictly except for extending into the chamber on the .25. It has the 7 o'clock extractor.
The barrel is not threaded. It is a slip in like tha Favorite. Whoever fitted the 44 .22 barrel did a nice job. Bore is pristine, it may have been relined but it looks like a John Taylor job if it was. Turned the shank down to fit. Removed the threads in the process and it fits fine. Driled a hole for the barrel screw to fit into and another for the forearm screw. It would not be noticeable except for the fact that the hex part of the 44 barrel is a little shorter than the Sideplate barrel and the forearm extends past the hex part of the barrel slightly. A 44 forearm might be the answer. Need to compare one to see if that will work. Action locks up very tight with both barrels. Owner said .22 shot fine. I am assuming if the .22 shoots ok then the firing pin will be fine for the .25. I will find out when weather clears here. Snowed here in Southern Illinois today.

Slumlord,
Does yours have a link between the lever & the block?

Does anyone know of a side plate that was made for a threaded barrel? I'm assuming none of the were threaded.

Ron

Did some research in 5 of James Grant's books this evening. Apparently they were made both with threaded and slip fit barrels. Tracing the sideplate through his books gets interesting because he jumps arround a lot and there are bits and pieces of info scattered thru all 5 books. When he wrote the first book he thought there were only a few side plates ever made. By the time he finished he discovered there were a lot more out there than he originaly thought.
My side plate arrived yesterday. Went to the gun show in St. Charles Mo today and found another one. Gun was rough. Points ground off of the butplate. .25 Rimfire with bad bore. Dealer did not know what it was. I decided to pass on it because the one I just got was a whole lot better and in the same caliber. Never handled one before and saw two in two days. Funny the way things happen.

Just thought I'd add a picture of the inside of a couple of small sideplates.

Hey Guys,
Sorry for the large picture I'm still trying to figure this posting thing out.  Meant to add a little more info.  The upper rifle is what I believe to be a standard small sideplate rilfe.  It has a 7:00 extractor and uses a link to keep the breechblock closed.  On the lower rifle disregard the barrel and forearm this gun came with a Rem. barrrel and long skinny forearm.  The bore was terrible so I replaced it with a numrich bbl and made a forearm for it.  I believe the rest of the gun to be original Stevens but it had been reblued before I got it.  As you can see the top of the lever bears against the bottom of the breechblock similar to the patent drawing.  It also has a 6:00 extractor which pivots on the lever screw.  Little hard to see in the picture.  The frame is not tapped for a 7:00 extractor screw.  Both rifles are 22 cal.

The pictures may be big, but they are excellent. Thank you. Now I understand fascination with Sideplates.
