You may well be right.  But I refuse to give up my optimism.   Wink

And, of course, a conference call with more than 3 or 4 on it is not functional.

C W,
I'm involved with two different associations, I'm one of 12 BOD members in one association, and one of 5 members on a ethics committee in an another association.

We do conference call meetings all the time, both association meetings are recorded and both have good moderators, no one gets out of line, questions are put to the board and are usually answered or commented on individually by each board member, open voting is done and everything is done in an orderly open manner.

Other than around the holiday season we always have a very good turn out most months. The last time I checked I think ASSRA only had 8 or 9 listed as BOD's, hard to believe they cant get enough members together at one time to have a good conference call meeting, it's not like they have to drive in bad weather to make a meeting.

Hope I don't get deleted, banned, or tarred and feathered for saying this but here goes. Maybe one of the first things that has to be done to make ASSRA membership grow would be to get members on the board that care enough about ASSRA to attend the meetings. Maybe set up a membership drive and offer some kind of incentive to get shooters to join.

A lot can be gained by looking at how other National Associations work and grow, if ASSRA officials want ASSRA to grow,  it could be that the BOD we have now are very comfortable they way things are going, some may think that more members only means more problems ?.

Don't know if the ASSRA meetings are recorded or not, if not they should be if for no other reason than to check later on to see just what was said and how it was said.

I've never been involved in a chat group of any kind so don't know how something like that would work, I'm sure that it could be worked out with a good moderator but if ASSRA Board members have a hard time getting together just for conference call meetings I don't think you will ever see an on line meeting, or even just a question and answer Member - BOD get together, all it would take would be interested members and of course interested BOD members and a good moderator with his finger on the delete button, if anyone gets out of line he hits the button and the problem is gone. I still don't think it will happen, come on BOD's Please prove me wrong.

Let me clarify the following " Having a chat with the whole BOD would not be easy as we have a hard enough time getting all together for our regular meetings."
Getting a time for 10 people to get together it is not easy to each month We have the date and time set for meetings for the year following the Annual meeting. We do have the meetings as scheduled but it is not often that all can participate in each meeting. Any one that has worked on a committee for any group will understand and the more people you have to get together the harder it is. I have missed a few meetings both on the phone and at Etna Green as other commitments work, family or emergencies get in the way.
I do not like to chat on line as I find it takes too long to respond and also I don't have hours to spare. I make time for meetings and don't mind answering questions via email or phone. The BOD is made of individuals and you may have 10 different answers to any question. The board either comes to a consensus  or votes yes or no and that is what we as as the board live with.
This conversation will I am sure continue and please remember what I say is just my opinion. Others on the BOD may agree with me or not and unless we have a vote on something it is just each of us saying what we think.
Cheers,
Laurie

Laurie -
Thanks for keeping up this on-going discussion.  It is a bright spot in the process.  A VERY VISIBLE bright spot.  It offers us some insight and is a demonstration that at least one of the BOD listens.

I well understand scheduling and conference calls - engaging in up to several a week between suppliers and customers.

The forum is a tremendous asset to the ASSRA.  Chat room is something that I shy away from but will try.  As I've said before, the recoding of key points is far too valuable to be lost - hence my preference for a separate area for feedback to the BOD from members.

Disregard any suggestion on using the chatroom for anything.

I've spent half an hour downloading and installing to no avail.

If it's that hard to do, the process alone would cut out too many people for it to be of value.

OK, thanks, it worked.  It worked remarkably well.

Now I see the reason for someone asking if anyone uses it.

It even worked talking to myself - logged in on another computer - it worked.

SO, is there some way of knowing IF anyone else is on it?

Some forums have an indicator of how many and/or who is on the chat room.

The status indicator: IRC Forum Chat - [ Login] at the bottom of the GENERAL page does not reflect my use of the chat room.  (I used the link several posts above, can't get in with the "Chat" in white at the top of the page.

We have a partially functioning chat room.
