Tommy,
The most definite way to tell the difference between a 44 and 44 1/2 is to open the lever. A 44 1/2 will have a block that passes through the bottom of the receiver, a 44 will tilt within the receiver.

This is a 44 Stevens, a position rifle probably from the 30's - 40's made by Savage. That wood on the finger lever is a palm rest. Nice looking rifle.   ledball

Based on the picture you have either a 417 or a 417 1/2, both are based on a slightly heavier 44 type frame. The 417 was chambered for 22LR with a heavy barrel & a long beavertail forearm w/barrel band, a 417 1/2 has a lighter barrel and was supplied in 22LR along with 22 Hornet, 22WRF & 25RF. The forearm was shorter with no barrel band. Not sure if this is the info you are requesting.

Hey, Tommy I'm glad you found the site. I told you these guys would be able to help you. This is the best site with the most helpful people on earth. It has renewed my interest in collecting and shooting single shots 100 fold. Best of luck. Don

That particular Walmut Hill model was made in the early 1930's as I recall. The last and best 44 that Stevens made. It has the Speed Lock action. The Walnut Hill name was used earlier on some very fancy rifles. They are great shooters. Mine is an original .22 Hornet and I am still looking for a .22 Long Rifle version or any other available caliber for that matter. Welcome to the Forum. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here. I have learned a lot and hopefully passed on some of what I have learnd to others here.

So is that a 417?  Tommy, can you easily cock the hammer with your thumb?  Does it have a coil mainspring?  And what about that scope?

  Tommy ;

   "Value" is a subjective measurement in monetary terms defined as the sum total a willing and informed Buyer (singular) will offer to pay for a specific Item; and what sum total a willing and informed Seller (singular) will accept as payment for that same specific Item, on any given day, i.e., a mutual meeting of the minds.

   Absent that taking place, all else is a mere guess based on prior recorded sales data.

    Regards,
    C.M.M.
