38-56 Accuracy

As we are asking about the inherent accuracy of various rounds, let me ask about the 38-56. Little bit more powder than the 38-55, but is there any reason to expect anything other than similar 1MOA accuracy at 200yd? Thanks.

9 out of 10 times the perfect rifle is the one you currently own you just need to get out with it and try every variable known to man until you can get it to shoot sub-minute of angle groups. Prior to this arduous process you will need to fully understand how to read multiple wind conditions, mirage and the use of proper bench techniques. Those last items alone have been the down fall to allot of ultra accurate rifles that one would claim just will not shoot.

I have a friend that shot a 38/56 extensively in a nice Hepburn years ago.  He was looking for better knockdown than the 38/55 in BPCS. Case is bigger and holds more black powder. This fellow is a very good shooter BPCS and BP target rifle. Shoots Schuetzen too but with 32/40's

He gave the 56 up and went to the 40/65 for BPCS due less problems with fowling, claimed something about the bottlenecked case that made it fowl more. I am not so sure it was not the 38 barrel that was the problem. I know my 38/55 with black is very sensitive to being shot clean shot to shot.

Smokeless ? you can't fill a 38/55 up with smokless anyway so why use even larger cases.

Thats all I know

Tradition.... 38-56 was designed for the 1886 Winchester. There were a few 1885's origionally in this cartridge buy very few. There is no substitute for practice, so that being said go with a known good cartridge and practice, practice, practice.   Don
