Stevens 417 Walnut Hill Factory Checkered Stock?

Anybody ever seen or heard of this option? There was a time when you could order most anything but I am not sure if this was still the case when the 417 was in production. Looking at one with checkered stock that looks sort of right. I am thinking it was done after the fact. Owner does not have a clue. Also has the wrong sight. How tough are the Lyman 48L's to come up with? Could go with Lyman 144 but I know these are tough to find and expensive.

My 417 WH ( heavy ) has a checkered forestock. Sorta looks right but always suspected it was done after the fact.

I looked for a 48L for years with no luck. Found a Vaver that fit.

Would be interesting to compare checkering pictures.

I've got a 417 1/2 with no checkering, but I've seen a 417 1/2 with it & it definately looked like Stevens work. When I first bought mine it had no rear sight, found a Redfield 75 & modified the base bar for the flat side wall. Worked fine till I found Lyman 103 (which is supposedly better than a 144) & it's still on the rifle.    MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL,,,MIKE...
