Today at the Midwest CADA show a gentleman showed Dave Norin and me a very nice Oberlies with a tiger striped maple stock. I told him the little I know about Oberlies, and both of us in unison sugested he should email Michael Petrov. If any of you are experts on the subject, please let me know and Dave or I will pass on the imformation.

I have seen maple stocked Oberlies guns.  I own a wonderful little Oberlies   Winchester Model 92 in 25-20 with varnished over maple that I should attend to.  Can you tell me a bit more about the gun you and Mr. Norin saw?  I would like to add another Oberlies to my collection if you would share the name of the owner-seller with me.  Thanks for emailing me at wilmrph@verizon.net  Bill Murphy

There is an engraved Oberles Highwall for sale at Hallowell Auction site. It is beautiful but will break most banks.

Biggi just looked at this thread. She giggles and says we will be coming down to help you sort out those pesky Oberlies in a few days.
Just stay cool Bob.   Cheesy

Now that's a high dollar Hi Wall right there.  Don't know that I'd pay that much for it.

I would be curious how a High Wall ended up being chambered for .22 LR.  I would expect a Low Wall in .22 LR or even .32 20 WCF which is what my 1885 was when manufactured.

So I must assume this is NOT the original barrel.  It is a beautiful piece of gunsmithing and engraving.  I agree the price is a tad high.

There were several ways that a high-wall and .22 LR could end up together.  For one thing, there could have been a .22 high-wall musket, which would have been just like the low-wall later, but in high-wall configuration (these were the first and second models.)  In addition, if one ordered a #3 or larger barrel for their .22, the resulting special order rifle would be a high-wall.  Then again, if you have a high-wall and want a very special .22, there is nothing to keep you from building what you want, except for how much you wish to spend.  I once owned a hjgh-wall in .22 LONG, with a #3 barrel, for instance, but it didn't look as good as that one!  That''s my story and I'm sticking to it!

And then there were the High Walls Chambered in .22 LR with the right side of the action cut down in order to facilitate loading the small cartridge.  Sort of a High-Low Wall.

That Oberlies is nice for sure.  I dont like the stock or grade of wood. The pistol grip looks very similar to the Navy arms rolling block rifles. The checkering is, is, Looks pasted on at an odd angle.

Have our own Tim, the *classicchecker* on this forum restock it with a nice piece of my wood with the *elegant* pistol grip of the original Winchester rifle, then it would really be something.

Just rolled out of bed and felt like rabble rowzing a bit. Ha ha ha!!!

Oh, I forgot,,,, it needs a set trigger of some sort too.

The engraving is very nice.  Is it worth 75.000 dollars? Hell no!  If it is, I have a nice Ballard that can be had for 50.000. I dont shoot it much anymore.

                               Good morning!  Joe.  Smiley

I agree with Westerner. Like the wood but the pistol grip is iffy at best for a gun of that cost. On Ballards at that price, How many do you want?  Don rustyrelx

Schuetzenbob, post pictures of the Ballards and I'll help you with the Oberlies identification.  If you don't want to post pictures, email them to me wilmrph@verizon.net
