Just picked up a single cavity  B&M 311193 mould and handles at the Salem, VA gun show.  Anyone have any experience with it?

Show us a pic of the mold and bullet. I'm I'm very anxious to see a BT cast bullet.

It's a beautiful looking bullet.  I've never seen one like it before. What do you plan to shoot it in? 30/40, maybe?

Don't have a 30-40.
Candidates now are Martini Cadet in 30-30 and Rem 40X in 7.62 Nato.

The 30/30 sounds the best. Try putting a filler over the powder to the base of the bullet to protect the BT. Maybe the shot gun filler Grex or in a pinch, Cream O Wheat.

Good idea.  I have COW and often use dacron.  But for this I'll be trying everything -

Cat_Whisperer That is a fine looking bullet, make sure you let us know how it shoots for you, have always had the urge to have a 200 grain plus mould cut in that BT shape, I have been testing the bullet below with a similar nose but GC base.
Good Luck with it,
MIKE-T

I have test fired the Lyman 323366gc bullet with out GC in my 32-40W breech seated, my rifle has a 8m/m .323" bore so it fits really well. It shot just OK until I added a 1/32" plastic wad breech seated with the bullet, when I kept velocity to 1300-1400fps I shot some very good 100-200 groups with it this fall, then put the targets where I would not loose them & did a heck of a job as I can not find them. All bullets went though target nose on, really would like to use it but they only weigh 185-6 grains when cast from 25:1 alloy and even with the pointy nose they drift more than the pointed 215 B&D bullet I usually use.

Frist glance.  20:1 (I was casting 300gr .40's) and 700dF.
Probably should be hotter.  Didn't bother to take oil off mould either.

Odd bullet is the about 200gr .30 HBC that Jay Downs designed (I did the cad work).

Bullets weigh about 182gr and measure 0.311 as cast.

What flavor of 1/32" plastic did you use?

1/32" thick HDPE polyethylene sheet material I cut with wad punch I use for cork wads.
Material was only $2-3 for a 12x12 piece, had 1/16" thick also, but it took a lot of work to cut.

Thanks, MIKE - I've made several punches and can order the HDPE from McMaster-Carr.

Mike,
I have a single and double cavity molds for the 323366. I was going to ream the GC off the single and try it. What was your powder and  charge?

Frank I shot the 323366 bullet (No Gas Check used) cast from 25:1 alloy w/1/32" poly wad breech seated 3/32" deep, using loads of 13.7 grains N110 or 14.3 grains of H4227, Fed LR primer.
Off to family get together, back on tonight,
Mike

Cat,
No, I haven't tried it at all. I'll never know if it totally seals unless I take the GC off it and since I have a double cav in the same bullet, I'll be able to to try it all three ways (PB, w/o GC and with GC). I don't think it will loose much value modified (they sale for about $65 on Ebay), it may even increase the value for guys like us. I also have a 8mm Mauser to try it in.

Mike,
Thank you very much for the load data.

Tried several in several .30's I own.  Nose is small.  Will only have two bands contacting the rifling.  Ouch.  Hmm.

Frank I have a Single cavity #323366, will try to re-cut the base band to a boat tail shape, nice part is if it does not work, I can cut again to plain base.

I have the # 38 B&M hand book (1958) it only list Lyman moulds, did B&M make moulds or have Ideal/Lyman make moulds for them to their specs?

Great looking bullet.  Does it use a 30 caliber GC?  What is shank diameter?

I keep thinking that a big 220gr .30 cal might be fun to tinker with.

Be sure and keep up posted, especially if you are able to recover any bullets.  I'd like to know how much, if any deformation results at Schuetzen speeds.

Regards,

Rich

The bullet is simply a boattail - no GC.

The mould could well be Lyman.  Only markings are on the edge - B&M and 311193 each on one half.

Belding & Mull?

They did make bullet moulds at one time.

The bullet is shown and detailed on page 36 of the 1925 Belding and Mull catalogue 311193. 311 dia. 193 grains weight cast in no. 3 metal? Guess they has their own alloy formulas.
Suggested load was 17.5 grs. weight of no.80 powder.
So it was available as far back as 1925.
They also had boat tail cast designs for other cals.

WOW.  That makes me feel GOOD about the $50 for the handles and mould - regardless of how it does or does not shoot!

THANKS!

Cat_Whisperer looking in my old loading log for my 32/40W loads using the 323366 bullet, I found that originally I had used 1 gallon milk jugs for plastic material to make wads for under the breech seated bullet, did not have any negative notes about results so it might be worth a try, and the price is right.
