Ruger action.

I have a No#1 action that was a tropic rifle in .458 mag.  I have turned it into a take down rifle with a few various barrels already made and tried from a machine rest.  I'm wrestling between two calibers for my final barrel and thought I might get some advice in deciding between the two.  I'm looking at either the 32-40 or the .32 Winchester Special as my final cartridge.  I have built 32-40's in the past for friends and customers, but the .32 Winchester has caught my interest for shooting targets.  This rifle was in a fire and I have relegated it to cast bullets for target work.  I have had the action tested for hardness and it checks good.  I've never had a lead gun to play with and saw this as an opportunity to play around with different calibers and haul it to some local matches.  I would also like to find some different style stock patterns for the rifle that are not of the traditional design.  Any suggestions will be great.  I've been reading the posts in this forum for sometime and really enjoy it and glad that I could join.

I'd do a 32-40 as a 32 Special runs a little bit hotter in the pressure department.  Since the gun was in a fire I'd try to stick with as low pressure cartridges as I could, besides that, a 32-40 has more readily available breech seating stuff.

David.
Do you have a benchrest style stock for the Ruger? I would be greatly interested in seeing a photo.

My design is for an offhand stock, fairly traditional other than the fact that it's on a Ruger No. 3.  If someone has a defunct No. 1 stock that they would like to donate to the cause, I can make up a benchrest pattern stock to have duplicated.   Smiley

I would like to see a bench stock setup for a No#1.  Is it a blank that can be purchased or is it custom?  I'm not worried about pressures since the action has been re-checked for use.  The problem seems to be the brass as everywhere I've checked they have been on backorder and it appears the list just gets longer.  I did pick up 100 once fired .32 Win brass for 20 bucks at a gun show which kinda leans me in that direction.  Breech seater is  no problem since I make them anyway... well used to.  I'm retired so all the gizmo's and neat gadgets I'll be making for myself.  I'm pretty excited about my project since over the last 40 years I was building rifles and repairing arms for other people and now I can experiment with my own ideas.  Yes any ideas on stocks or pictures would be great.  I would also be real interested to find if anyone has played around with the .32 Win round just to see what it will do.  I'm not a velocity freak and I don't hunt anymore so all the rifles I build will be for accuracy only.  Once again - you are a great group of folks with a vast amount of experience building and shooting these fine rifles.  All thoughts are of interest to me and I'll post pictures of this project when I figure out how to use this digital camera.  Oh yes - does anyone use the Accurate 5744 powder or any of the Vita"V" powders?

You might want to check out CPA Rifles, (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links), to see if any of their designs will work for you.  Personally, though nice designs, their prone or long range stocks would not necessarily be the best for a dedicated bench rifle.

I can tell you from experience that a factory varmint model stock works surprisingly well off of the bench.  Wish the forend was a little wider but no big deal as it stays upright pretty well and I a mplanning to use a barrel clamp anyways so no front bag to ride.

I have seen a add-on wooden shoe the mounts under a factory stock using a machine screw up through the "shoe" into the rear sling swivel screw hole--fitted with a machine screw insert.

The shoe is grooved and then bedded (with release agent of course) to give a really good tight fit.  The base is flat and wide as is legal and parallel to the bore.

One of the best ways to have your ruger cake and eat it too.

I ordered my stock from Pecatonica River:   (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) I had restored/rebuilt a HE Leman long rifle for a fellow who had only the barrel without breech plug and a piece of wood that looked like it was a stock at one time.  They supplied everything I needed and worked with me really well.  I called them and they are making me a No1 and a rolling block set of stocks that are 90% inletted to my specifications.  The prices are more than fair I think.  They specialize in long guns - but they also cut stocks for about anything a fellow could want.  I'm very pleased.
