Normally I would post this on the Double Gun Forum, but its been down for 2 weeks. I have the opportunity to get a beautiful Cooper Model 38 in .22 CCM. I know I can use Fiocchi .22 Velo Dog cases, but they do not hold up well at the pressures the cartridge was designed for. It is why there were only 200 of these rifles made in this caliber. The rifle easily matches my G&Hs for quality which is why I want it. I like to shoot all the guns I own, so I want it to be changed to a caliber I can use. As I see it, I can alter the bolt to rimfire and shoot it with .22 mag RF, which really appeals to me because I use the lovely milled magazine. The other possibility is to rechamber it to .22 Hornet and make a solid aluminum loading block to replace the magazine.

Joel,

Something to consider....    the 22 CCM rim thichness is ~ 0.050", and the 22 Mag rims I've measured are ~ 0.044", so you'll have ~ 0.006" to add to your Model 38's existing headspace. Base dimension of the 22 Mag is also ~ 0.008" smaller than the 22CCM, and the 22 Mag case is ~0.100" shorter. You may decide that the existing chamber is a bit sloppy for the 22 Mag conversion.

There was a gentleman in CA that was forming a number of obsolete cases from modern brass, one of which was the 22 Maynard extra long centerfire from 22 Hornet brass. I 'm unable to lay my hands on his contact info right now, but maybe someone from that area will chime in.

BACO also lists the 22 Ex L CF, but don't know their source or if they produce them in-house. You might have them send you a couple sample cases to see if they are suitable for your Model 38.

Regards,
BP

Thank you very much. That is exactly the kind of information for which I was looking.
